Rock,
I droppd my truck off at the dealer tonight for 3 things. The door cracks, head gasket leaking and the piston slapping. (I have a 99 with a 5.4 manufactured in 2/99) The service manager told me the piston slapping is a known problem with these engines and that Ford has not yet developed a solution to it. If you go out and start up brand new trucks you'll probably hear it. Mine isn't that loud, and to be honest I would have been ignorant of it if I hadn't read about it on this website. I think I remember reading on one of the posts that a guy had over 100K and hadn't had any problems. As for me, my main concern is the leaking oil and the door cracks. One step at a time, ya know? Hope this helps.
Joe
