Need pics of electric fan install: Flex-a-lite #250/260
Hi guys,
I've did a search and read some older posts on electric fans. But I have a few questions on the Flex-a-lite #250/260.
1. How hard is it to install and how reliable is it for towing (I sometimes tow a 22ft. Bayliner weighs about 6000lbs. in the summer).
2. The amperage draw on the fan is 30 amps. Will this cause problems with the electrical system since I have stereo system that draws about 55 amps?
3. Does the #250/260 come with all the accessories to install it or do I need anything else?
Sorry for the questions. I was considering a larger MAF, but for the same $$ it looks like the electric fan would be more beneficial.
Thanks.

Jupiterak,
I installed the #250. Go here to see my experiences:

Photopoint's gonna take this from me soon, but go here to see pix:

It wasn't hard to install. More time involved with planning, (some bracket fabrication was required; at the time, the 250 was only offered for GM's) and the 'red herring' error about the thread twist in the Haynes manual. I didn't have any trouble power-wise using one OEM battery and running 6 150W KC daylighters and high beams for 90 minutes in the desert last year. I haven't towed yet, but it probably wouldn't tell you anything anyway. My boat and trailer probably only weigh in at ~ 3500-4000 lb.
I agree, the MAF didn't do anything. fish

Gofish & Don C,
Thanks for the pics and info. Looks like the electric fan is gonna be my next project.

Gofish, I read your thread some time ago and purchased the flexalite #250 and will be installing it very shortly in my 2000 7700. Big question, how painfull was it to remove the clutch fan assembly and what direction thread was the bolt securing the pulley. I don't have access to the special tool required to keep the assembly from turning. Any feadback would be appreciated

Flyfisher,
Break it loose by going counterclockwise as you face the engine. The shaft has right hand threads. Haynes is wrong with their claim of left-handed threads.
If you go in the right direction the first time, it shouldn't be too hard at all. As you can read, I just made my job so much tougher by following the Haynes directions, which were in error.
Check out Bill Aquino's advice on making the restraining tool yourself; if you've got access to metal bar stock, you can make it yourself. In either case, you'll need something to stop the clutch from spinning.

I used a 15" adjustable wrench & 3lb. hammer.
It took 3 hits to break it loose and the fan screwed off by hand. Strike the wrench toward the passenger side fender. The belt holds the pully tight enough.

Obvioously it works anyway but, the 260 is supposed to be for Ford and Dodge and the 250 for Chevy if you believe the Flex-alite ad.

I talked to a Flex-a-lite tech today and they recommended the #260. It's exactly the same as the #250 but has universal brackets. I just ordered mine from Summit; unfortunately, it's a special order item and takes two weeks to get. I'll post the results after the install. Thanks again.
