Question cam compatibility question for 1992 302

I want to put a cam in my 1992 5.0L speed-density controlled EFI truck engine when I put my new Windsor Jr. heads on. I know I have to convert from speed-density to mass-air, or the cam will screw up the computer, so I'm working on getting the conversion kit (part m-9000 from Ford). I want to know if cams that work in mustang engines will work in my 5.0L engine. By the way, anyone ever try to put a cam in a speed-density controlled vehicle? I just wondered before I spend $650 on the conversion kit.

Re: Speed-density "mods"
You can do anything you want to a speed-density system, but you'll need the computer programming changed. This usually requires some dyno time as well as engine-management programming. Personally, I think the conversion to mass-air is worth the $$.

Re: Mustang cams
I strongly suggest calling the cam manufacturer and letting them choose the cam for you. They'll ask about your new heads, MAF conversion, and other mods. Then based on that info, and how you want to use the truck, they'll get you the best cam.

Thumbs up

Hey blue, I believe the Mustang cam's will work in your 302. Your 302 block is a roller, right? I dont think there is any difference between those and the trucks. Might want to ask on the Corral.net, someone sure to know.
Good to see another Windsor Jr. user...Im in the process of the head swap in the Stang. And from what Ive heard, I dont think we'll be disappointed.

the mustang 302 has a roller cam, i think yours is hydraulic. leave the cam, alone dont get the conversion. spend the money on an edlebrock intake (i think they make one for your truck)and with what is left over get some roller rockers. THIS would also be an easier job than replacing the cam and messing with electrical stuff.dont know how many miles you have but it might be a good time to get your injectors cleaned while they are off.

blue92flareside, I sold my 92 f150 last year and did a mass air conversion simliar to what you are considering. For your info, you have a roller block with roller lifters. The mustang cam will work but the firing order is different. To save considerable dough,You could swap the top end for a 5l mustang c/w computer if you have a 5spd. tranny and know how to rewire the injectors for SFI,the o2 sensors on each bank and replacement of the BAP sensor. You will endure some pain but will gain HP. You could consider regrinding your SD cam. Good Luck.
