I am guessing that Haynes is saying that due to covering both the v6 engines as well as the v8's.

5.4 will be the same I would think since they are all supposed to be Windsor engines.

Maybe there are two different builds on the 4.6 engines I just don't know on that.

I determined mine the first time by purchasing the replacement pump and simply threading my fingers around the end to see which way was going to tighten. I found out it was normal thread and the hard part was finding a way to hold the fan to break it loose.

A lawn mower fanbelt resolved that issue quite handly.

I am also finding the Haynes manual doesn't describe very well where sensors are located on the 5.4 engine as well.

I am thinking it is better to ask here than to RTFM

Thanks for the offer on the heater core stuff but it's not needed. Thankfully it's not leaking yet. I was just basing that on the poor condition of my cooling system. Secondly I own a real 2 volume Ford factory manual for my year of truck. Bought it from a Ford tech on this site for a very good price when he purchased a bunch of old shop manuals some dealer was throwing away. So all in all I have 3 repair books on one truck, just need a cd/dvd now.
Someone else has said this already but I agree that the hardest part is finding something to hold the WP with. The v-belt idea is a good one ( not sure how it worked). Then someone else said take a scrap piece of metal and drill two holes the distance of the bolts in the WP pulley and install that on there. Me, all I did was hold one bolt with a boxed end wrench against another bolt and had someone else use a pipe wrench and hammer. Just took a couple of taps and it was loose. The real pain was getting the old WP to release from the cavity it sits in. Mine was really stuck and I demolished a 2x4 smacking that thing off. I cleaned the cavity out as best I could but it may or may not leak. Time will tell I guess.

Best of luck to all who attempt this project.

I bought a water pump tool kit at a local NAPA parts store. Comes with a holder tool and a wrench, makes it real easy once you turn it the right way. (Of course I already mentioned that in the 1st post in this thread.)
