Question STP fuel treatment

The local Wal-mart is selling this stuff for $1.97 for a 3-pack and most over places sell it for $2 somthing for one bottle. Does this stuff really help clean the fuel system? My dad and I have used it as a joke in his '85 Econoline 150 (1 bottle for every 1/2 tank). We both have noticed it did seriously improve the throttle response cause he had like none at all untill we started using the stuff (gone through 6 bottles already). We haven't seen a change in gas mileage by much but it does seem like he gets a very very little more then normal. This this just a head game or does this stuff really work? If it really helps out I think I'll try it out in my F-150.

I think you would be further ahead to just use quality fuel all the time. That being said, there is one sure fire way to test your STP.

You drive your truck for a month. Tell your father or wife to either put it in your tank or not, but don't tell you if the additive is actually in the fuel. You need to drive your truck not knowing if it's really in there. In addition you must buy the same brand of fuel for the entire month - different brands have different additive packages. After a month you decide if it helps. then find out if your dad actually put any in your tank.

If throttle response is poor, perhaps it is time for some decent plug wires.

He has alittle rough idle, sluggish acceleration, and smells like high emissions so I figure he needs a new o2 sensor. But anyway he had replaced all the plug wires and distributer cap. It might be time for him to replace the plugs soon. No joke either when he runs 87 octaner fuel it really runs like crap unless he uses 93.

For my truck I have all new plug wires and distributer cap, a disconnected o2 sensor which is why I believe I have abit of rough idle and sluggish acelleration when I nail the gas. I think I'll replace the cheap Champion plugs it has with some Bosch platinums, replace o2 sensor and reconnect.

Back to the fuel treatment thing I beleive he must have had alot of carbon buildup in there and somehow the fuel treatment clean it out some for it to run better. I would only want to use this stuff to clean the carbon buildup on the pistons and vavles. Is there any other fuel treatment that will do this in 1 shot and not having to use 6-10 bottles? Any opinions on the Z-max stuff?

I use redline SR-1 Complete fuel system cleaner ( just dump 1 bottle in gas tank). They say that one bottle at oil change knocks off 50 % of the carbon dep. In addition, it lubricates everything.
Great high temp detergents.

( $5.69 per bottle)

You could also use techron from you local chevron station. Techron is a wonderful high temp synthetic cleaner. ( $ 8.50 per bottle)

If you use quality gasses in your tank carbon dep. shouldn't be a problem.
G-luck
