Question How many gallons are left when the "low fuel" light comes on?

I would like to figure out how many miles I have left when the light comes on, without having to run her dry. I've gone at least thirty miles & been ok. I you reply in miles instead of gallons, please post your mpg.
thanks,
neal

I recently made a trip and drove until the low fuel light had been on for about 45 miles, (begining to sweat). I had traveled 330 miles and the tank would only take 23 gallons, which shocked me as I thought the tank held 30 gallons, unless there was still 7 gallons left.

Driving back and forth to Florida I will average anywhere from 14 mph to as high as 16.4 with about a 600 pound load in the bed. A lot depends on how heavy my foot gets, seems like over 75 mph is going to move the needle real fast. The mountains in West Virginia and Virginia don't help either. I run 89 octane, don't ask why, it's just that I feel comfortable running the 89.

I've run mine to the "light" a number of times. Each time I have between 1.5 and 2.5 gallons left based on the fill-up numbers. When I see 315-320 on the odometer, the time for the light to come on is not far off. Im averaging 14.3 all around driving.

My light comes on around 22gals. I've got a 24.5 gal tank so that leaves about 2.5 gal. That's with a short bed 4x4. Since you have a long bed and a 30 gal. tank I'd take a guess your light would come on at around 26 gal. Maybe more long bedders will post to confirm that.

Industry standard is 3 gallons when the light comes on... not sure how accurate ours are, but generally, the tank needs between a gallon and a half and 2 gallons to reach the pick-up mesh on the sending unit. It's not right at the bottom, but pretty close, and will vary slightly from car to car depending on who installed the pump that day.

i think it is somewhere between 2.5 and 5. i have fille up to about 20 gallons with the light on. sometiems if your tank is low it comes on going up a hill and then goes off on the way down or vice versa. thats my guess 2.5-5

Cool

I would say about 3 gallons are left.
Perhaps it is only my truck, but that last 1/4 tank just is not accurate. Seems you go a short distance and you are below the red.
Anyone else notice this?

Hi Numbers look good.

Gets even more interesting if you have the "digital odometer" (trip meter)

Put it in "Test Mode"

Have a good one. OT

Been like that on every truck I've ever driven. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota... It's a wonder they can't come up with a more accurate form of fuel detection. The Woman's Cadillac will tell you exactly how much further you can go before running out of juice, depending on the speed you are going. And it tells you in gallons, accurate to 1/10 of a gallon how much fuel you have left. And believe me it's accurate, (I've tested it and had to walk home). But Hey, they're trucks, and we're big manly "truck owners" who are supposed to live life on the edge, right??? LOL
