good laugh
I was at the local dealership where I bought my F-150 from last year, because my girlfriend was interested in getting a truck. So she decided to get a new Ranger Edge. Well the salesman was going over some of the final stuff with her yesterday and he was talking about changing the oil. And he said you can just bring it here. And since he knew I had bought a truck the previous year he said, "isn't that what you do." I said no I just change my own oil. And he said, "well you voided your warranty." Can you believe that. He tried to convince me that I voided my warranty if I change my own oil. So I told him, "I would like to see you guys try and deny me a warranty claim." I just thought some people might get a kick out of that.
I guess a lot of us voided our warranty then. What motor and tranny does the ranger have? I would've had a 2001 if I could've got my mom or dad to co-sign for me. The one i was going to get had the 4.0 and 5 speed. It was nice. Only had it in black but I would like the blue better.

You know, we've had 12 or 13 Mercedes over the last 13-14 years and now have a Volvo. Someone once told me they would never ever, buy an import like that because they made you bring it to the dealer to have everything done to it even general maintenance like oil changes or they don't honor you warranty.
I laughed at the ignorance. This isn't Russia.
A manufacture (or dealer in this case) can't require you to have any service at all, done only by specific people like a dealer to comply with a warranty. The only way they can require something like that is if they provide that service for free.
Dealers are such putz's sometimes. They make a warranty sound like it's a whole lot more complicated than it is. Or that it does a whole lot more than it does.

Well her Ranger Edge has the 3.0L engine with the 4 speed automatic overdrive. It's actually a pretty decent little truck. Some nice ride height and nice wheels, feels and looks like one of the F-150's, which is why I allowed her to get it, plus it's a Ford, so how could I say no? I tell you what though. The next thing I want is the Harley Davidson Super Crew, with the 5.4 supercharged engine. That is one sweet vehicle. By the way, I really like the looks of your truck King James. Out of curiosity, how hard was it to put the white face gauges in your truck. It's something I'm really interested in, but have been reluctant to do because of installation.
Gee, if I had $45 to blow for every oil change, I MIGHT let those boneheads at my dealership change my oil........NOT!!!

I work for Ford and it doesn't void your warranty if you change your own oil. Just save your receipts for the parts and you will be ok. PS, ford never investigates maintenance records until you are on your ESP coverage, even then its rare.

Yeah that is funny, you know over the past 10 years I have had more dealerships screw up oil changes than I ever could. One pinched a dipstick in a full size Bronco I had, then pulled it apart trying to get it out. So the truck sat for 5 days while i drove their rental cars because the dumbass that replaced the pan gasket pinched the dipstick between the block and the pan.
A Volvo dealer two years ago stripped a stainless oil plug, then gave me the car back with the plug stripped. So they paid $17 bucks for a new plug and I gave a lecture on how to use the right size socket and not get in a hurry.
Last year, a Ford dealer put a filter on dry on one of my trucks, which made for a feat trying to get it back off. You can only imagine if they screw up the simple stuff, how they must be with the complicated stuff.
Also check all your levels reguardless before you leave the dealerships, it saves a lot of arguing later on.
So for simple oil changes, do yourself a favor, do it yourself and you know its done right.

changed the oil in my f150, and accord yesterday.
while under the honda i was pissed at how tight i had made the drain plug bolt. i contemplated putting a small breaker on the socket to get it off.
i then remembered the previous change was the only one i have ever had done by a dealership (or anyone for that matter) it was free from the honda dealer as part of some emissions recall.
i was tempted to call and complain about what they did, but it just reconfirmed my belief that if you can do it yourself, then do it.
i wonder if they used the same impact wrench setting they use you putting on tires.
they didnt do anything to build my confidence in them.
