My 4.6 tops out at 95?
Having recently installed the Superchip, Ravin Z-33 and more recently the AirForce FIPK, I was rather startled to learn that my truck tops out at 95mph.
I was on the freeway last night and just punched it, letting it ride all the way up to see how far it would go. It hit the 95 mark......and just cruised making this odd humming noise. No vibrations in the truck outside of the exhaust noise....nothing really amiss that I could feel or hear.
Pulled off and into a gas station. Checked the Superchip....yep....still firmly and happily in place. I knew it was just by the shift pattern.
So I get to thinkin', maybe I've got 4.11s in the rear end (riiiiiiight. NOT!) so I go home and pull my paperwork. Nope 3.55s accoriding to the friendly little window sticker.
I'd take it in but it's out of warranty and don't really wanna shell out the bucks for them to tell me that it's "fine".
Any ideas?

Dude, that sucks! With all of the stuff that you have on there, you should be maxing out at a lot higher than 95! My 4.6 maxes out at 100 before the governor kicks in, and I odn't have anything but weight added to mine. Who knows, there's got to be something wrong. Take it to the dealer!

It is normal. I have the 3.55 rear end and it is governed at 95mph. Superchip could change your program and take care of it. Hope this helps.

The first time I had the chance to get up that fast mine only would go 95. Then a few weeks later I floored it on the freeway, and it went to 100. I kept on the pedal and the speedo reached the highest point it goes to,and showed no signs of topping out. I estimate that it went to 110 before I came to my senses
The chip was installed both times,so maybe you ran into the same thing I did possibly. I still haven't figured that one out,and likely never will.
Mine also had the humming noise when it stopped at 95...I heard from somewhere that there are two governors on the engine..top speed,,and RPM's. Mine was floored both times,so I don't know why it worked once, and not the time before,,,,,98
SIDE NOTE:Please make sure you install some speed rated tires if you plan to have more adventures like this(Just concerned for your safety

Heya guys.
Thanks for the help.
Clarkbar, I would agree with you if I did not have Mike T.'s Superchip in. That's one of the reasons I bought it, among the HP increase, was to get rid of that barrier.
98screamer, I smoked the General's it came with off the rims a while back and shod it with some really good Dunlop tourings rate at 140. They've only got like 11K on them so I think they'll be safe. I've got a set if Pirelli 6000s that sometimes go on it if it looks like it is going to be dry for a while.
We're gonna give it another shot tonight at around 2am to see how it goes. Hopefully there are no cops!

All I have done to my 4.6 is put in a K&N filter, and mine will cruise past 100 uphill easily. I have run beside other trucks (Dodges and Chevy's) that top out at 100, and mine easily pulls away and I have never experienced it even showing a sign of slowing down. Maybe the first owner of mine did something to bypass the governor though. Is your fuel pump strong enough to accomodate all that you'r pushing through it? Just an idea, I am no mechanic, but it seems like it may not have enough flow to push all of the gas that you need into the engine. Just an idea. Good luck, and yeah, watch out for those cops!

I may be sounding very stupied for saying this but if you have an auto tranny make sure it is out of OverDrive. Mine stops me at 95 if it is in OD, I take it out of OD and I am gone! speedometer pegged and all
Caelistis:
You may actually have more top speed with a lower gearing since our trucks will never pull redline in OD. Im not sure if this is always the case but most cars will have a higher top speed in the gear before OD. Ive gone 100 in fourth gear in my truck but never saw much over that in fifth. With lower gears, fourth may be slower, but OD will definatly be faster

I had my '99 F-150 with the 5.4, 4x4 Off Road package to 105mph and it shifted to overdrive and I still had gas left. I let off. I didn't see any reason to go any faster with it. I am the second owner so it might have a chip in it.
DUH!!! Boy I feel stupid now. That's exactly what it was on mine,f150freak! It didn't occur to me at the time, lol. When it stopped at 95,the OD was on. When it went over 100mph,it was off....Thanks for ending the mystery, for me at least

These vehicles are pick up trucks. If you wanted to go fast then why didn't you buy a sports car? I bought a pick up truck because it was practical. I am more interested in my truck having good throttle response and good acceleration around town in normal driving then seeing how fast it can go. I really don't want to go 100 mph in a truck.

Denaveechi,
Bully for you. For those of us that want to go over a 100 in our trucks, we install performance mods. Besides, I have a sports car. It's a GT40.....far better than anything currently out. Run along now. If I sound vexed, I am.
The rest of you lot......
I did some testing last night on I-5 and came up with these results. In 2nd on the column, it hits 78 and the rev limiter kicks in. Redid the run with OD off and, yes, it DID go past 95. But it did top out at 120. Blerg. Double blerg.
So........I'm going to talk to some of the speed shops around here and see if I can get 2.73 dropped in the back end. Not really worried about towing and hauling since the purchase of a 550 so this truck has become the "test" truck for whatever bizarre ideas come into my head. I read the magnacharger post in this forum and while tempting.....I'm leaning towards the Vortech model simply because of the really good experiences I've had with them on the 5.0s.
Thanks for all the help, I do appreciate it.
