Question

Hi Cager

You didnt say what year??

I had 83000 on my 88 F250, check engine light came on & stayed on. Engine ran fine.

Had so many other normal fix-it stuff, i got rid of it. I suspect it was emission related,(all original parts, yep!) as the computers were more geared to that type of problem, compared to the new pcm that show more codes for all kinds of things.

If your gonna keep it, get it checked out.

Good luck. OT

Question Check engine light

My check engine light came on at 85,000 mi. Is this a regular interval. On one of my other trucks the light would come on every 50k but that wasn't a ford. I was just wondering if ford did the same thing. I still plan on having it checked but just wondered if anyone knew anything about this.

thanks

97 F150 supercab 4x4 4.6L

found someone with a scanner. Will let you know what it turns out to be.

EGR sytem code came up. checked out the system IAW Haynes manual. The manual says my DPFE sensor is bad. $73.93 at the dealer. havn't replaced it yet.

Some codes will clear just by disconnecting the battery for about thirty seconds.

I own a '97 F-150 4X4 Xtracab and my Check Engine Light came on (4/2/01) at 31300 miles!!!! I hadn't cleaned my K&N filter since I installed it and I had just filled the tank the day before, so I checked the air filter & gas cap, but they weren't the problem. I was at a loss so I ended up taking it to Ford................. They said it would be $71 to hook up the computer and read the code and then labor & parts -- "if needed." The code said one of the O2 sensors was bad. After it was all said & done, it cost me $71 for the computer + $70 for the sensor + $70 for labor.
I've since done a lot of research on the internet and have found that a good maintenance manual and a hand held diagnostic computer could be a worth while investment -- you can fairly easily diagnose the problem, pay $70 for the sensor, and replace it at home.
Here's about the cheapest Ford model that I've found:

Question

I own a 1997 F-150 supercab with 4.6L V8,
Tonight I hit 75,000 trouble free miles and the check engine light came on. Everthing looks fine and runs fine. I assume it probably an emmissions related thing. Most likely O2 sensor(s). Short of taking to the dealer and paying a fortune in labor and parts to most likely change one or both O2 sensors, If I just change them will the fault clear in the computer and turn the light off or am I stuck taking it in to the shop? Is there any way to clear this with common weekend mechanic tools? Thanks for any advise or help

If I were you I would get a scanner tool, or find a good independant shop to fix the truck. Don't asume it is a O2 sensor, my 99 f150 had a Check Eng Light, on mine it turned out to be a mass air flow meter. But with 75,000 miles and up a 02 sensor could be the cause.

Here's a couple other scan tools to consider:

I'm considering the cp9035 as a relatively inexpensive way to get at the codes. Not sure if it clears them, there is an erase button.

I Have a 99 F150 4.6L and my check engine light came on at 19,000 miles. Luckily still under warranty. The check engine light deals mainly with emissions. In my situation it was the EGT sensor.

Well I went and got the new upstream oxygen sensor to install. I talk to a Ford mechanic and he said this was likely the problem but no gurantee. I planned to do this Saturday morning but as I drove to work on Friday morning the fault cleared and the light went off. So what the hell is with that. The next fun was after I stopped for coffee the truck wouldnt start, the stater just clicked. Well I figured it was the starter and being so far from home I had it towed to the local Ford Garage. What happened is the wire to the stater burned off do to corrision and they had to install a new eyelet on the wire. $68.00 to check it out and $2.50 for the eyelet and $44.50 for labor. A grand total of $110.00 for a $3.00 job had I been near home. Good thing for having AAA towing. No charge for that. Great day in all....Maybe Monday will be better.

Hey Woody 1, Don C. said what i was thinking.

If you dont have a manual, get one, Haynes is cheaper, not the best, but better than nothing.

As i understand it, clearing codes has to be done scan tool thru the data-link. There are so many things hooked up to the PCM, that can throw codes.

Sometimes you get lucky just replacing parts, not knowing for sure if its bad?
Fortunately the OBD ll, really helps, of course gotta have scan tool and the expertise to understand the codes

Good luck. OT

About 75,000 my check engine light came on, and I searched everything over the truck and everything seemed in order, so I ignored it. It comes on almost every time I get about 2500 miles on my oil now, and I am at 130,000 and still going strong (knock on wood), but after I change my oil and go for about 30 miles, it goes off, so I guess that it's related somehow. Good luck!
