EGR question.
EGR question.
I have a 91 Ford F-150 Xlt Lariat with the I6 in it. The E.G.R valve needs replacing on it. Is there anyway I can bypass it w/o the the "check engine" light coming on? The guys at Broadway tires and service tell me i cannot do this because the EGR runs off the O2 sensor. If there is anything i can do to bypass it without the "check engine" light coming on, please let me know A.S.A.P

i want to bypass it because it is very costly for me to replace it right now. AutoZone wants $100 for there best one and that is very expensive for me right now, there cheapest one they got is $73.99. The egr valve is just emissions junk and they way it is setup on my truck it is very difficult to replace to remove it from the tube where the exhaust gases enter the valve. So if there is any way i can bypass it w/o the "check engine" coming on please tell me. I really would appreciate it. But if i have to spend 100 bucks on this thang, so be it.

First, the EGR valve does not "run" off the O2 sensor. And second. no you can't bypass it. That little white sensor that is mounted to the top of the valve lets the PCM know how far the valve is open. If it is not in the propper possition for a given duty cycle of the EVR solenoid it will set a code and trigger the check engine light. I don't know what kind of a problem you are having, but most EGR problems on these vehicles deal with a bad EVP sensor (the white sensor mounted on the valve) or a broken or cracked vacuum line. I hope this helps you out.
