Sluggish 4.6L
what gear ya got. if its a highway gear then it will be sluggish.....i have no idea why people buy the 4.6l for these heavy trucks anyways.....2000 f-150 xtracab lariat 4x4 5.4l with no slug...........
I have a 2000 with the 4.6 and 3.55 open rear end and it gets up and goes at WOT for a pickup truck and its still stock. I can't say much for the 231HP 4.6 engines as I haven't test drove any yet but if there is a problem with the power of the newr 4.6 engines I'll keep what I got or go to the 5.4 but the 4.6 suits my needs for what I use my truck for that matter the V6 would too but I just had to have a V8.
Sorry to here that. But the way you get low end performance is with the 5.4L Triton V-8. The 5.4L is nothing more than the 4.6L that has been stroked. Now, granted the newer 5.4's have a few other things changed, take a serious look at where you need the power and choose the correct power plant.:o
I can't say as though my truck feels "sluggish" off the line . . . if you slam the throttle, you'll definitely get thrown back a bit and if your on wet roads or a slight incline, the tires will break loose pretty easy.
I agree that it really picks up over 3,000 RPM but all of these Triton engines are supposed to produce 90% of their torque at or below 2,000 RPM which menas the 4.6 is producing roughly 260 ft lbs at 2,000 RPM . . . not exactly shabby.
Granted it doesn't have the grunt of the 5.4 but it has plenty for me at this point and I haven't found it to be a slug off the line. If anything it pulls pretty hard up to around 65 - 70 mph and then tapers off after that.
I've got a 97 4.6L EC 4x4 Auto with 3.55LS, K&N Filter and 3 inch single exhaust with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. Superchip and Air Intake to come hopefully late fall

My truck has 3:55 gears. That is not the problem. It doesn't matter wether you push the gas peddal 1/4 the way or full throttle, there is no differrence in pick up. The truck hust doesn't run till it hits 3 grand. And the only mod it has is a flowmaster 50 series muffler, but it ran this way before the muffler was installed.

Something else I think may be happening.....every since I bought my truck it seemed to do a bit better in performance than others in the same size. I have even beat some friends with the 5.4 off the line but they caught up with me pretty quick...about 1/8th mile.
I have heard that the some of the Triton engines perform better than others.
Back when the 97 models where babes, there seemed to be some very wide variances between stock milages and so forth.
I can also tell you that my truck seemed to get faster and better milage after about 24,000 miles.
Try the FIPK and see if this does not help...it is a relitively cheap add on and you will like the sound...I have been told that it and a cat back go together like bread and butter.
My catback, pulley kit and super chip are on the way.
Good luck,
Rocks
