Post 4.6 Horsepower

I recently bought an 1999 expedition with the 4.6 modular engine. I had read in various publications that Ford had increased the horsepower in 1999 to around 240 for this motor. However when I looked in the owners manual it states that Horsepower is still at 215. Was this a running change during the 99 model year that I missed out on or is the owners manual wrong?

Somewhere in that time frame Ford started using the PI "power improved" pistons and such which was supposed to give more horses due to better airflow (or something). Sorry I don't have more specifics. I just wish they were using the PI stuff in '97

As far as I know, it is only the 2001 4.6 motors that were suppose to get 240hp. Up 20 from the previous years. It seems that it is not advertised as 240hp anymore. Like 230 or 235 is what is advertised.

It is the 5.4 that got the boost from 235 up to 260 hp in 99.

Actually fellas they increased the 4.6 to 231 this yr. and supposedly put the 4.6 up to the standards of the old 5.4, which i drove both and the 5.4 was still more responsive. The 5.4 in the book says 260, but actually motor trend dinoed the 5.4 to 280, they said ford did that so the V-10 would look better.

Hey screw where did you get that information from motor trend. What issue or on there webpage. I never heard anything like. Am curious to see if its true thanks. Because if they said it had 260 and it has 280 then that wouldn't make sense to advertises it as 260. Thanks

By law Ford can do anything that they want to. They just wanted the V-10 to look better for retail purposes since it had just came out, they didn't want people thinking it would come anywhere close to the V-10. I can't remember what issue it was, but i got to thinking it makes since. The chevy 5.3 has 285 hp w/ 325lbs/torque, and the 5.4 has 260hp w/ 350lbs/torque, and both my buddies have one and they raced, the 5.4 blew the 5.3 up. And when i read that article it all made sense. So it's true, and motor trend wouldn't lie anyway. The 5.4 has 280 hp.

The 5.4l has 260hp. Ford doesnt need to make a 1 thousand horsepower engine with 5 foot pounds of torque like chevy to put in a truck for racing.

Thumbs down

A co worker of mine bought a 5.3L 2001 silverado pretty much same time I got my truck. We raced and I killed him. He had no chance. So what the f you talking about just me. I don't like people knocking on 5.4L. Its a lot stronger and better made engine then the 5.3L ohv pushrod shovie.

I have driven many many 5.4L Fords. Last June, I took a vacation on the North Shore in MN. I rented a 2000 Supercab Chevy 4x4 with the 5.3L engine. I noticed that the Chevy was without a doubt much stronger than ANY 5.4 I have driven in a F150 except fot the Lightnings of course. The 5.3L also got 18 mpg (try that with a 5.4) and it reved out to a full 6K RPM. I was very impressed with the truck, would have purchased one, but I love the Fords. Just my two cents, we all have some brand loyalty in us and love our trucks, but I can't see how anyone can knock the Chevy, it was very nice to drive.

I must also give credit to FastDEW, a proud Ford owner(I hope) who is able to compliment the competition. The 5.4 is an impressive engine with really good lowend Torque, but a comperably equipped 5.3 Chevy still seems to be at least as powerfull even with lower torque numbers. </font>
Yep, I am a proud Ford Owner. I love my truck, but I have to give Chevy credit when it is due. That Chevy I rented last summer realy drove nice and hauled butt too. I also liked the transmission shifts better than the Ford. The Fords brakes are MUCH better feeling than the Chevy's. I think both trucks have their strong suits, I just liked the Ford enough to purchase one. I am very happy with it so far. I don't see the point in knocking the competition. I don't care that much for the Dodge but I know guys who realy love them, and thats good, if we all drove the same truck it would get boaring very fast.

I'll agree with you there. I test drove a 5.3l Chevy extended cab before I bought my Lightning, and that was one fast and powerful truck. I was VERY impressed. Roomy on the inside, powerful, pretty nice looking, but not an L.
