Question Extended cranking only when partly warm....need suggestions.

I tried searching for this but could not locate anything similar in the Engine or Electrical systems forums.

I have noticed for awhile (3 or 4 months maybe) that when I stop the truck for a short period, enough for it to become partially cooled (like go into a store for 15 or 20 minutes or so), when I try to start it, it cranks for maybe 4 to 6 seconds before catching. There is no hint of trying to catch before it just catches. Normally the engine fires in the first half second hot or cold.

I have NOT checked the air filter yet, and will do this tonight. I have 13K on it so maybe it is restricting the airflow although I don't drive in overly dusty conditions here in Mass (I'd think anyway that a dirty filter would make really hot starting worse, but hot starts seem OK).

Does anyone have any suggestions, like the MAF sensor or anything that might cause it? Cold and hot starting is apparently normal, as is idling, gas mileage and power. Even with warranty I would rather not have the dealer mess with it until it becomes a real problem.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the suggestion, Fordtec2001. I *will* do that, especially if nothing else comes in that I can check for myself first. I do have the factory books but, of course, not the testers.

By the way, what is the 'wds' tester? Just curious as I don't recognize the term.

Thanks a lot for your help. I appreciate it.
