Oil Filter Relocator kit

Need some input on oil filter relocator kits.....I know the good side is I will be able to change my filter without smearing the side of my engine.. What I would like to know is if there are any downsides or issues to consider? I have 2001 f150 5.4L 4x4. Any help appreciated.

My '97 5.4 came with one and I love it. The filter is located more or less behind the driver side headlight and it is easy to get to. Only bad thing is: it is horizontal mount, so you cant fill it clear full of oil when you change the filter and: There are 2 two feet long hoses that carry the oil to and from the engine. These hoses WILL leak at some point and one could break at any point and my engine would be kablooie. But I am not too worried about the downsides. I have almost 100,000 miles on the engine and no oil leaks. I will probably replace those hoses this summer and they should be good for another 100,000.

I have it on my 99 extend cab. It's great to do your own changes. But the hoses are the big issue. I had a hose blow out on me while i was driving. And when they blow, the oil is out in a heart beat, and down most of the underside of the truck. Just keep checking the lines to make sure they are ok.

I don't 4 wheel, but i would imagine that people couldn't without a guard because the hoses are exposed, so you would have to watch out for something going up there.

I have a dual relocation kit. One of the filters is a full flow and the other is a by-pass filter. So I get the best in filtration.

Not to mention I now have over 9 qts. capacity which helps with cooling in the summer, and also the more capacity the more additives to work on the by-products of combustion, makeing for longer engine life and a better running engine overall.

Good Luck in your search

TTT - To The Top - A short post to get a message back to the top of the listing, so more people will have the opportunity to see it and maybe respond. Lots of people only read the recent and most active messages and don't scroll to the bottom of the list, or go to page 2. Don't know why I find great info in all the messages!

Installed the Perma Cool filter relocation kit this morning. I mounted it on the passenger side frame rail (inside), behind the bumper. I drilled and tapped the mounting holes for 5/16 - 18 bolts (didn't like the sheet metal screws supplied with the kit). Routed the hoses along the transmission cooling lines, tie wrapping them together. Every thing looks neat and clean and it is as protected as any of the other vitals underneath.

I used a Fram HP-1 racing oil filter (which is awesome compared to the dinky Motorcraft 400S).
I was using the Mobil 1, M1-201 and debated over using the M1-301 over the Fram, but this filter has gotten good reviews (not like the regular Fram filters). It took a full quart of Mobil 1, 5W-30 to fill it before installation. Then I needed to add another 1/2 quart to the engine after everthing was done. I'm estimating that I've got about 1 more quart of oil capacity over the stock.

With the Cool Collar installed on the filter, it looks really rugged and I have to complement Perma Cool on their product. The adapters are cast and machined aluminum. Entire installation took about two hours and I really took my time (it's a 2 beer job). I'm really satisfied with the results.
