Are performance chips worth it?
Do thry help performane noticabley. I have a mustang and have always heard conflicting reorts as to how well they worked in 5.0 cars. I have a 2000 4.6. Please let me know as we will be buying a travel trailer soon and I'll be looking for a little extra power. The exhaust will be done first. Jay.
The Superchip is definitely a worthwhile investment. Do it first, then the exhaust. The chip is the most bang for the buck. It took my truck about 2 tanks to really dial in for the performance end, but the tranny shifts start right away. The best way I can describe the power gain is when my air conditioner is on, I still have a few more ponies than a stock setup with all the accessories off on a good day. The superchip is the only one I recommend because it's not damaging like the old Jet chips in the 5.0's with low temp thermostats. Stay away from them if you like your truck, thats my opinion.
When you're ready to buy an exhaust system, read all the posts on this site- it will keep you from buying something you won't like when it's too late. I have dual Flowmaster 50's 4" tips out the back, and it's too damn quiet. $300 all together for the exhaust and I didn't notice a difference. $200 for the chip and I streaked a new pair of drawers. Get a hold of Mike Troyer he helped me out and he knows his stuff.

Is your car a stick? My friend just put a chip in his 2000 mustang GT(stick).and didn't feel anything..you also have to realize that a mustangs computer is already set for performance more than a truck, so you will only get about 10-15 hp with a chip in a stang. in a truck you will see more of a gain..
Thats a good point about the original setup. My car is a 5 speed.

Wow . . . it's a small world. 2 PG guys on the same page !!!!!
Check out the computer chips section of the message boards . . . lots of info. From all accounts I've read it can be summarized like this:
You'll pick up hp and torque gains with the Superchip (26hp and 40lb ft . . . if I remember correctly . . . if I'm wrong, someone please correct me). You have to use premium to get the effect. Depending on the layout of your vehicle (weight, gears, etc.) the noticeable effect will vary quite a bit. Almost all of the guys that have the Superchip like it alot . . . especially if you have an auto tranny, helps alot with the shifting and provides full torque during/after the shift . . . as opposed to the stock program which limits it. The big gain appears to be in the upper half of 2nd gear in the F-150's with the 4.6.
Like I said, check out the computer chips section, you can get lossed in there for days. Mike Troyer will also be around to answer your questions, very helpful and knowledgeable.

Also keep in mind that you are comparing car performance to truck performance. When you are starting with slow (trucks) you seem to notice a difference more. Sure .2 or whatever it will give you is the same. But in my experience you notice the gains more on a slower vehicle, given equal gains.
