Are you replacing the heater core? Do you have a manual or you guessing at what to do? I replaced mine and it is not something I would do with out the manual.

You missed a step, before you take the glove compartment out, you need to take the whole dash out. Then, recover the AC refrig. and take the evaporator case out, then you can open the case and get to the core.
5.4lariat,
I have done it on my 00 F-150. It is a pain in the *** to do. it is not difficult just tedious. BTW you don't have to evacuate the AC on the 97-01 F-150s. RTFM

i replaced my heater core last year on my 97.
let me tell you it is very tedious!!!
you will have to take your time.the entire dash does have to be removed.it comes out in different layers.be prepared to take a lot of screws out.most of all be carefull of the removal of airbag.
myself i did not have to evac. the system.
it took me about 9 hard at it hours to do this job and i am not a mechanic.
good luck i hope this helps.

Well thanks to all....I do have a Chiltons and Haynes manual, I did the core on my 88' Bronco II, It was a pain....this sound like a nightmare...well hopefully I will have some spare time real soon the change it out, has anyone ever put a ball valve on the two hoses, cause you dont need heat in the summer, especially Texas...I heard that the core not circulating hot fluids decreases the whole compartment temp and the evaprator (cooling coil) runs aboout 6 degrees cooler, Id love some cooler A/C and less ware on the heater core...Will shutting off the fluid flow hurt the water pump or anything else??
Well thanks for all the responses, coming home from a long day and having all the answers there is nice...thanks again guys!!

When you get around to changing it keep the pipes from the old core and have them welded together. In the summer when you don't want heat just disconnect the heater core and connect the hoses to the two pipe ends.
BTW I didn't have the disconnect tool so When I got the plenum lid off I cut the pipes off the core and removed it that way. I wouls also recommend getting new connectors and O rings for the heater hose to core connections.
