Post No power to fuel pump

Okay guys I changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, the high pressure pump still she won't start. I can not smell gas, so I decided for some reason I'm getting no charge to the pump, test every thing I could think of. There is no power to the fuel shut-off switch, fuel pumps, no fuel pressure at pressure outlet no air no nothing. There must be kind of relay or something I'm missing. Please help. I'm more than stumped. 1986 ford f150 4x4 - 302

Check the fuel pump relay. It should be a big relay in the main fuse block. If you pop the top, there should be a diagram that says which one is which. Just pull the fuel pump relay, take it with you to your local O'Rielly or Autozone, or whatever. They should be around $15-$20 or so. Plus you might be able to return it if that's not the problem.

You might also check to see if the spark plug wires are connected correctly. That info should be in your owners manual. Also inspect the distributer. If it is dirty inside or anything looks wierd.

Other than that, I'm at a lose. I read your previous post also, but I can't think of anything else that it might be. Hope this helps.

I know on ford cars, there is a fuel pump bump switch in the trunk. If the vehicle has been bumped, hard, the pump shuts down until the switch is reset. I don't know if it is in trucks or not, but it might be worth asking about.

Hey Jen,
When you are first trying to start your vehicle and you only turn the key on but don't turn the engine over can you hear the fuel pump start pumping fuel to the engine? It should turn on momentarily to build the pressure in the fuel lines before you try to turn the engine over.

The so called fule pump bump switch is up near the computer. You could have upset that switch when changing filter and or pump. Reset the switch before you spend too much money.

Good Luck! I have a friend with an '84 with a 302. I know he has had numerous prolems with his. I feel your pain...in a way. BTW, my friend dubed his, 'the beast', because of how it sounds when he starts it, and how it drives on the freeway...anyways, hope you get yours running.

There should also be some type of fuel pump relay or something under the hood on the drivers side on top of the wheel well that is black and has I think 3 or 4 connectors coming out of it and one of them says fuel pump right on top. On my 90' occasionally the fuel pump will stay on after the key is out and the truck is entirely off. After unpluging the connector that says Fuel Pump on it the pump shuts off. Every once in a while my truck won't start so I go and wiggle that connector around and then the pump works. So maybe that is something that you can look into. Do you have dual tanks and if does it do this with both tanks?

Did you find the bump switch? I think it's above the gas pedal someplace. It's a little black plastic box with a white button in the middle. the button should be almost flush with the rest of the box.
