Post Wet valve cover

I noticed today that the valve covers on my 4.6 are slightly oil wet. It is just enough to see the "wetness" there. The dust in the motor compartment almost has it covered up. When I ran a paper towel over the back passenger valve cover, it was a dirty black color. It wasn't fresh oil. When I look around the covers on each side, there is this "wetness" all around them. Even where the intake runners run by the covers. I live in Wisconsin so I don't know if this is just road grime and the salt/snow build up? Does anyone else have this sort of wet look. My motor has 52,000 miles on it. It usually is only 1/2 quart low every 3,000 miles. I was going to try and tighten the covers, but wasn't sure of how tight you can go with them.

That sounds good fixit76710. I'm curious as to what a dealer would have to say. Mine is way out of warranty so the more I know about this, the better I will beable to go about a possible fix. I hope it isn't the dreaded head gasket failure that everyone is talking about. My engine is a Romeo. I will check on the build date of the engine. I know the truck was built in May of 98.

Funny that you bring up wet valve covers. I just got my truck back yesterday from the dealer. I thought the rear seal was leaking. Come to find out that the passenger side valve cover gasket was bad causing the oil to run down the side. Warrenty coverd it though.

I have a '99 4.6L 4X4 ext cab. ORP w/ 34,000
