Under Drive Pulleys

Since I just came from the Mustang crowd, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with underdrive pulleys and or timing adjuster with the 5.4. I can see the UDs being a good idea as the benifits of increased tq & hp will be seen acrossed the entire power band...come to think the T?A was about the same way. I'm sure most guys on here use a chip for the timing...

I do have concerns with each though. I had zero problems with the UDs on the Mustang with the fact that it did turn a little hard at idle. The front end and mass of the tires is much more than that of the Mustang. That is my only concern with that.

The T/A issue is really minor... I'm not sure where to set it. The instructions give you the base for a'99GT and a idea of about how high you would like to set it. I'm sure a little testing could quickly provide an answer...only bad thing with this is once you advance the timing, you need to run premium fuel.

Anyhow I have both sitting in my garage waiting for a buyer or maybe....my possible attempting to put them on.

Any thoughts on either of these two items???? Good, bad, or otherwise....

Nobody has thought about it or tried either on their truck?

I have ASP (waterpump / crank) two pulley set on my 4.6 2wd F-150. I would say that the results are the same as with your Mustang. I like them for the increase across the entire power band. The only downside as I see it is that some fans can be a bit cantankerous to remove, but you know all about that, I suspect.

To really enjoy those pulleys go ahead and install twin 16" Derale electric fans in front of those pulleys.

Thanks for the replies fellas,

I must say I am having a hard time becoming adjusted to this web site. Just not as much traffic as I'm used to. The corral is a little busier. Not that make that any better of a web site....just different.

Anyhow back to the UD pulley issue. I figured that the results would be the same.

Now does anyone know if 4.6 pulleys work on a 5.4? The 4.6 in my 99GT was a windsor block like in the trucks, now that leads me to hope that the two share enough other similarities to allow for the pulleys i have to be used.

Peddler1000:

I have noted the fan and have been thinking about looking into a electric fan(s). I must say I was very surprised to see that the trucks didn't come with electric fans to begin with......the Mustang did. But I guess I'm comparing two different animals.

Good idea Max..... Go to the web site of the manufacture and get my answer. (duuuh...) Anyhow to answer my own question.... yes they will work. Glad to see its not wasted money.

Is ASP any better than Steeda? I know I purchased my Steeda's at about $40 less than the ASP List Price. Though Steeda's list price is $10 cheaper.

Do the three piece sets for the 4.6 and 5.4 actually SLOW the alternator? On the sets I saw for my '95 all the three piece sets had a smaller alternator pulley.

By the way, FRPP also has pulleys for the 4.6 'Stang. The pulley set on my 5.0 was a Mustang part, but they had the cross reference for the trucks.

SO there is really no reason that the ASP is any better than the Steeda.....other than it seems ASP has given a little more focus to the truck owners than Steeda has? I didn't have any trouble with the Steeda Stuff on the car. As for the the 3 pulley set, I only used the 2 of the three on the car. I didn't use the alt. pulley as I did not want to slow it up any more than it was for the reasons you gave Max....

Well at least it gives me somthing to think about... not sure how quickly I will begin messing with the truck. If its anything like the car, I was always thinking of what I could do once I started...

Thanks for the info Max!!!

This was my question. On my three piece set for the truck I have the alternator pulley is smaller than the stocker, which would bring the alternator speed up not down.

The ratio is still slower than the stock pulley set, but would be slower still without using the alternator pulley.

Do the new sets actually use a larger than stock alternator pulley?

Max,

Your point is understood. Though I haven't done the math the change in my main pulley still slows the alternator regardless of which pulley is used.

My point/question is that unless the alt pulley is actually larger on the new sets, that the charging would be better using the three piece set than it would be using the two piece set.

signmaster,

I am to believe you are correct. But you would not free up as much parasitic drag on the engine with the 3 piece set if the pulley is smaller than you stock pulley, on the alternator.
Though you would maintain more the OEM designed alt. rpm.

For the set that I have ( which again I purchased for the Mustang) the alt. pulley was larger than the stock pulley. Which would have slowed the alt. down, but freed up more power. I have no idea to how the pulley compares to the one on the truck. I just have not taken time to look yet.
