Thumbs up Got a new MAF today.

Well, it finally died at 75,600 miles, not too bad of a life IMHO. What did tee me off a little was that they don't cut you a break on labor for having a K&N intake, which I think they should. I wish I could get paid $104 for R and R four nuts and two hose clamps. I'd be rich, lol! But, on the upside they gave me the old one back! I can now go ahead with the porting on the old one and switch the element out. They installed a new aluminum model, not the black plastic one on the newer trucks. All told, not a bad thing, other than the price. $275?? Whew!,,,,98

I also got a new MAF today for my `99 F150. It lasted 40,000 miles. What a joke. The truck ran great for about an hour, then started stumbling again. The wipers come on every now and then for no reason, and the check engine light comes on, then goes off after a couple hours. This truck is the biggest POS I've ever owned. Ford can kiss my hard-earned dollars goodbye!!!
BTW, you got ripped off on the price of your MAF. I paid $130 and installed it myself in the dealer parking lot in ten minutes.
I'm trading in this pile of patriotic puss as soon as possible before the head gasket starts leaking again. Then I'll buy the wife a real vehicle, either a Nissan Pathfinder or a Toyota 4Runner. Then I'll trade my 160,000 reliable mile `88 Pathfinder for the last good Ford truck; a 1979 F250 supercab 4x4. You can keep buying new American/Mexican Ford crap, but I've seen the light and will not be wasting any more free time taking my $20,000 4x4 Yugo to the shop.

If you needed a new MAF why would you put a Ford OEM back in your truck? Seems like you would want to put a New Granitelli (or however you spell it) in. This is what I will do if I need one. I don't beleive the power gains but I bet you might get better thottle response.

Thumbs up

I am planning to port out my old housing and use the new element, which should have about the same effect. I don't know, I just like experimenting, and keeping the wife happy with a stock replacement in case I screw up. The Grannatelli's and Pro-M's are just too expensive in my opinion as well. I may get one of those later on. My warranty has only been out for 500 miles, I have to get used to the fact that they can't tell me what to do anymore, LOL!,,,,98

Dependability for living on the road, I guess was the main reason for going back with a stock one.

I had to replace the MAF at 56,000 miles in my 99 superduty 5.4. I thought this was rediculous! I brought my truck in the day before the MAF went out for scheduled maintenence. I gave the dealer a hard time about it cause he wanted to charge me over 200 to replace it! I told him they probably screwed with it while it was in for service and then he agreed to replace it for the cost of a rental which was 28 bucks! Kind of shady don't ya think? Needless to say, I never broght it to that dealer again!

I also have the problem with the service engine light going on and off. Seems like every time I'm ready to take it to the dealer to look at it it shuts off. I know if I bring it there and it's not off they'll tell me nothings wrong!

The whole engine was just replaced because of a bad cylinder head.

Cool

HI!... CARPCOP : BYE, SEE-YA LATER, enjoy your NISSAN piece of crap. !!!!!!

If you guys decide to go with a aftermarket MAF, then get a PRO-M. GRANETELLI MAF's are known to have problems. Every person I know that has used one has ended up switching it out for a PRO-M unit.

Well, come to find out, I should have titled this thread"Got a remanufactured MAF sensor by Hitachi today". They charged me $275 to install a MAF that wasn't even new Ford stock???? The first thing that tipped me off was the plate on the back of the center post, both it and the screws were sandblasted. They didn't even take it apart?? Sheeez!
I am mad, thinking I got a new one, but I also know there's not much that can be done now. Unless the dealer will come clean about the whole thing.

On a happier note, no CE light with the ported MAF!! It also seems to be a little peppier in the midrange, with no loss of low end. I checked that by tromping on the gas in the middle of nowhere, Yep, still broke the "tire" loose, hehehe.,,,,,,,,98

Exclamation

Well, not much to tell if it goes bad or not. But if the check engine light comes on, and the code notes a lean condition, it could be the MAF. You can get codes read at Autozone for free now. I'm sure they do it in hopes of selling you the part required to fix it.,,,,,98

Every time my check engine light has come on, it has been a dirty MAF (from K&N oil) The last time was the MAF going out of specs, cleaning did not help it

When my MAF went bad the truck would hesitate before comming to a stop, stall while idling, or when backing up slowly.

Neal...I have an `88 Pathfinder that has 160,000 miles on it that has never given me any trouble. I have a `99 Ford F150 with 40,000 miles that can't go more than a week without expensive repairs. Which is the piece of crap? Do you have any critical thinking skills at all? My Nissan can't tow much more than my 12' fishing boat, and it has about 100 less horsepower than my Ford, but it can get me to work every day without the CHECK ENGINE light coming on, or stalling, or surging.
I guess in all honesty my Nissan is a piece of crap; I only paid $2000 for it and it has a dent in the rear and the paint is fading, and it doesn't look as cool as my Ford. But, I didn't pay $20,000 for it either.
If you ever sober up and want to try to be objective about things, check out a Consumers Report magazine and see how well Nissan's reliability stacks up against Ford's: No comparison. Fords are simply not nearly as reliable as Nissan, or any other Japanese import.
Nissan is coming out with a new full-size truck next year and guaranteed it will smoke the F150 in terms of power and reliability. It will be equipped with an Infinity Q45-derived V8 with 345hp. I talked to a guy in Tennesee that works at the Nissan plant there that is on the employee consult team for the new truck. He said that they have their sights on the F150 and are making sure it is superior to it in every category.
So, you can keep replacing parts, arguing which cylinder heads are bad, and trying to insult people between crushing beer cans on your forehead; I'll get a pickup that is worth the money.

BTW: After I installed the MAF, it ran good for about 2 hours, then the check engine light came on and it ran even worse. Took it to the dealer and they said that the second MAF was bad, along with some other sensor in the throttle body. Total bill was $230 after I was refunded for the first MAF. I've had it for two days now, and tonight it started hesitating a bit and stumbling just slightly. No check engine light yet, but with this worthless pile of crap, I expect another trip to the shop will be needed next week.

I hear ya Carpcop. I have almost exactly the same situation except I dont have a Pathfinder, I have a little 2 wheel drive Nissan v-6. Yeah it's not American built, which I dont like, but until America decides to build me another vehicle that will perform as well and last as long as my "Nissan Piece Of Crap" I'll keep supporting foreign countries economies, thank you very much.

I have a '98 F-150 XLT offroad package and the only good thing I can say about it is it DOES have the HP....when you can drive the POS anyway. I wouldnt even have this truck if my wife wasnt so hard-headed and from a Ford family. The truck looks really nice, all my neighbors like seeing it sitting in the drive all pretty and shiny. I wont even drive it anymore, it's strictly my wifes vehicle at this point. The last decent Ford I have owned was my old SV Cobra from the 80's. Since the '90's came along Ford has been in love with this computerized and electrical sensor crap and all it seems to be is a gimmick for them to rake in the money.

I havent had a single mechanical issue with my wife's stupid truck that wasnt one retarded "sensor" or another. How lame. You would think if they are going to electrify and computerize %90 of the truck they would at least research the damn technology.

At any rate, sorry for the "I HATE FORD" rant, I'm sure all you Ford lovers really enjoy hearing things like this but I stumbled across Carpcops post while trying to find the stupid MAF specs because tomorrow I have to go put the damn thing on the diagnostic machine so I can verify the failure before I go sink more money into a huge pile of crap.

Sorry again for the rant. I really dont hate Ford, just everything they have done for the last 12 years.

P.S. Am I the only one who see's the Ford commercials with their CEO and just wants to reach through the screen and squeeze his neck till his head pops off?

-EDIT- BTW, my "Nissan piece of crap" has 270 THOUSAND miles on the original engine with NO engine problems EVER in the 8 years I have owned it. The only thing I have had a problem with was the transmissin which cost me $1,600 to have rebuilt. I paid $4,500 for the truck. My wifes Ford -which I cant even work on because Ford is too busy trying to find more ways to make money with a shoddy product, it has to go to the shop to have the SPARK PLUGS CHANGED!!!!!!!!!!-cost us $21,500 and has had over $4,000 in repairs AFTER the warranty expired.

I also have the "piston slap" issue, which my dealer denied until the first trip back AFTER my warranty expired, so I STILL have the issue because I am tired of paying for manufacturer defects.

So if I seem a bit down on Ford even someone who is as irrational as the "Nissan piece of crap" guy can SURELY see why. This is insane, not to mention complete disregard for the consumer. And people wonder why this countries economy sucks....

Sorry for adding to the rant, I re-read it and thought I should justify my complaints before some hard-core die-hard Ford fan came down on me for daring to complain about Ford. If any of you can honestly say that Ford deserves my money more than Nissan or some other foreign-and more reliable-manufacurer then please speak up. I would really like to hear why so many people keep buying these trucks with so many well documented problems.
