5.4L/4.6L Engine Swap...Anyone Done This???
Keyser Soze
I have a 2001 f150 4.6, Is it possible to swap 5.4 cams into the 4.6 heads?. From what i have heard they have more lift and duration. Is this possible?, and how much power might be gained?. ( I live in california and have to deal with smog checks every two or three years) Thanks for any information you can provide. Larry

Speeder, I too live in California, but I have yet to receive a notice for smog inspection. I was told by a friend who knows everthing about everything that '95 and newer vehicles are exempt from inspections since they run much cleaner than thier predessesors. As far as changing cams since you have the heads off anyway to check piston-valve clearance, why not go to 5.4 heads which probably have larger valves? also with the swap to 5.4 heads will the 4.6 coil packs still work? And what about exaust and intake manifolds?

Hey guys the 4.6 and the 5.4 have the same exact heads, swapping them would acomplish nothing unless you use the new PI heads... Intake and exhaust manifolds will fit between the two because they are the same!....
Hi WhiteFlight
Everything is the same except the exhaust manifolds, According to Neal you must use headers with the 5.4 heads because the EGR is in a diferent place and the stock exhaust manifold wont clear it.

HI... GUYS : I'll go through this one more time so you will understand, because I am seeing a lot of mis-information on this subject. If you have "97" to "2000" (not sure about the new "2001 4.6's) truck 4.6, and you install a set of "99" and newer 5.4 "PI" heads, you will gain H.P. The "99" and up MUSTANG 4.6 2-VALVE got "PI" heads as well. That's why it jumped to 260H.P. You won't get the same H.P increase because FORD's played with the cam's profile and used a redesigned intake manifold on the MUSTANG. The "PI" 4.6 heads on the MUSTANG and the "99" 5.4 "PI" to "2000" are "PHYSICALLY" the same exact heads. They do have different PART #'s, but I asked some of the SVT engineer's at the DETROIT AUTORAMA and that is what I was told. The "99" 5.4 got 25H.P extra over the "97-98"5.4's, so I figure you would gain at least 20H.P by swapping heads. As for what headers or exhaust manifolds to use on a 4.6 with 5.4 heads, use the one's designed for the 4.6 because the 5.4's EGR tube is located in a different location than the 4.6. The 5.4 "PI" heads are IDENTICAL, outside cosmetically to the PLAIN 4.6 heads. It's the internalls that got changed. BIGGER exhaust and intake valves, Better contoured intake and exhaust runners for better air flow. The "99" and up 5.4's also got more cam lift over the previous years. Hope this clears some things up.

They will require the use of a head install kit and gaskets. You and not re-use any of the old head bolts or gaskets. The install takes anywhere from 16 to 25 hours. Depending on your skill. You may have to remove the front engine cover to access the timing chains. Weather the engine runs fine with the OEM PCM is yet to be determined. Most likely a new program has to be written to accomodate the increased flow.

Hi JMC
I know you have to use new gaskets when you change heads and remove the intake, but why cant you use the old head bolts?. And what comes in the install kit?. Thanks for any info you can give me. Larry

Larry,
The head bolts are torque to yeild. They will deform and give false torque readings if reused. I kinda figured you knew 'bout the gaskets.
The kit contains all you need to re-install the head, nuts bolts, yada, yada...

I've decided that if I ever do anything to my engine, I'll get the PI heads from a Mustang, swap in my truck cams, and possibly add a supercharger. And then see how long the manual transmission holds up.
WOW that was a great reply Bratpane!!! That does make sence to go with the NAVI engine. I have the 4.6L, do you know if the tranny is cool to hold up to the navi engine? Also I would have to get the computer as well I suppose?
THANKS 4 YOUR HELP
P.S. I think that has 300HP + 300LBS RIGHT?
