Post How hard to change Oil filter on 5.4??

Hey everyone, I've read that the remote filter is no longer available. I was wondering how hard the filter is to get to on the 5.4? I've never actually seen a 5.4 with the filter on the block. My experience with most Ford products has been that the filter is usually a pain to change. My Mark VII was a nightmare and the oil would run all over the power steering rack.

Thanks,
Steve

You have to turn the wheel all the way to the right to access the oil filter on a 5.4.

Cool

If you do like Marv1 said, it's a piece of cake on the 2WD. There is plenty of filter wrench access and 2 ways that look plausible; within the drip cup edge/the lower, or above the drip cup completely(choose this one).

How hard is it? Looks too hard for me (I burn toast and evaporate water...). My dealer does the Bubbabendover and gets my money.

Just did mine last night. Didn't need to turn the tires, didn't use a wrench (I put the last one on.) I just crawled under, undid the filter and let it drain. Btw I change it with Mobil 1 oil and Motorcraft filter ever 5-6K.

When you get your answer (which I'll read to learn), can you point me in the right direction of good "toast making and water boiling" instructions???

Well if you're serious, here are some basics.

1. Get a good floor jack and jackstands or a set of car ramps.
2. Warm up the vehicle so the oil gets circulated.
3. Remove drain plug and drain old oil into drain pan.
4. Reinstall drain plug
5. Remove Oil filter
6. Wipe some new oil on rubber seal on the new oil filter
7. Install new oil filter
8. Fill engine with fresh oil.
9. Make sure drain plug is tight (don't overtighten) and oil filter is tight (hand tighten or you'll regret it next time)
10. Check dipstick (car flat on ground)
11. Start engine and watch to make sure Oil gauge goes up.
12. Shut engine off and check for any leaks.

Those are the basics.

Steve

Just tried to change it today. I have a f-350 with the 5.4,4x4. Only have 1200 miles, but figured I would get rid of any factory grit, before going to a syntenic. Found 5w20 motorcraft, and a motorcraft filter. Drain plug no problem, the filter I could not get it off for the life of me. So I drained the oil, and then couldn't get the filter off. Bent it all up but no holes. So I put the fresh oil in and drove it to a quickee oil change place. The dirt bags would not try to get the oil filter off unless I paid for an oil change, so out went the new oil with 3 miles on it, and in went the "fresh oil" and my new filter. Damn 40 buck oil change all told. Have to get on of those gizmos that fit over the end, and you use a rachet.

I've been changing oil in my parent's vehicles since I was about 12 or 13 and I have always done it in my own vehicles. I try to avoid other people touching my cars if possible. Sometimes they cause more harm than good!

A 5.4 4x4 is a pain!!!!

I can't believe ford couldn't come up with something better than that!!

Stupid front pumpkin gets in the way!!!!!

I ended up buying one of those perfect fit filter wrenches that go on a 3/8 drive ratchet. Works fine for me! Still wish I had the remote filter behind the front bumper like the shop truck we have at work has.

Oil Filter is a 3 minute process with a fit over the end filter wrench, 12" of ratchet extension, and a swivel socket at the end.

Don't try to save 10$, get the wrench and swivel socket.

BEWARE:, make sure the old gasket comes off with the filter and does not stick to the block. I had a quick lube filter which I replaced with a Mobil 1 but the Mobil 1 seemed to tighten up strange. Took filter off and the o-ring gasket from the cheap piece of crap filter from Jiffy Lube was still on the block. Disaster waiting to happen.

Next time, if you don't have a filter wrench, just punch a big screwdriver thru the filter and use the screwdriver as a lever to twist the filter off. It's messy, but cheaper than paying for another oil change.

One final thing. When you're working upside down and you're not used to doing it, there's a possibility that you might just be turning the filter/screw/etc. the wrong way. It's happened to me more times than I care to admit, even to myself!

The stock filter is the hardest to get off. Those "slip over the filter" wrenches will not work on a Motorcraft filter, and that is definitely the best way. Once you get the filter off the first time, use a filter that the slip on filter wrench will work with. I use a PurOne filter, but I'm sure other filters will work with it too.
