Amazed at K&N filter...

After many hours spent pouring over the forums, I finally did something to my truck. I put the K&N air filter in it. Many posts said that they noticed significant improvement from just this mod, but I was skeptical. No longer. Throttle is smoother and it even feels like it has more oomph. I'm sold. Mabye I;ll have to go with an intake kit one of these days.

Trying to decide if I want to do the exhaust next or go ahead and get the Superchip first.

Later,
Kevin

I'm with ya. K&N is the only thing I've done so far, and it is definitely worth the $45 and you don't ever have to buy a new air filter, so it pays for itself in 1 year.

I'm thinking Magnaflow SI/SO with 3" out the stock location next. I'm tempted by the chip, but not too hip on buying premium gas. Let us know what you do next and the results.

The drop-in only adds a few HP. To feel that would be highly imaginative.

No noticeable power gains for me...

...but it did seem more responsive to the throttle after dropping in the K & N. The slight hesitation after hitting the gas seemed to go away.

da filter

put a k&n in and there was a small differance but when i moded the air box it did a big change, took off fender end of box and took 1 inch paddle bit and drilled a honeycomb pattern along the bottom side only (i was afraid that water might splash up from the wheel well and enter the filter from the top,so i left the top part of the filter covered.) there on other mods on this site you can look at,i thought the poor mans mod was interesting

02XLT:

This is first mod I've done on a post-1977 vehicle. Used to mess aroung with my 77' Firebird and 73' Mach I. You know, the ones you could really take a wrench to.

maybe the OEM filter that was replaced was very dirty and putting a terrible burden on the intake system

The horsepower increase isn't much. But you should feel better response.

When I put one in my last truck I noticed no difference and the idle had a shake to it. I ended up going back to a paper filter after the K&N in my sonoma fell aprt after 3 years and many cleanings.

I haven't checked the mileage since I dropped in my K&N, but I haven't noticed an increase in mileage or power, maybe a slight drop in mileage - Y2K XLT supercab ORP w/ 5.4L and 3.55
