Post LOUD noise on engine startup

When I start my 97 f-150 with 4.2 V6, I get a very loud knocking noise, kind of like sticking a soda can in a ceiling fan, and knocks more often when I accelerate. I am a little afraid to let it run to see if it goes away or not. So i am thinking of getting it towed. I've had somebody tell me they think it might be a lifter but I don't know. Anybody have a clue?

Yes, it could be a lifter, although it could be alot of other things to! If it's lifter, it wouldn't hurt it too bad to let it run a little while, as long as you baby it. BUT, it may not be a lifter, and if you can afford it, I would just have it towed.
It's safer that way.
If you have a warranrty, most warranty's will cover towing up to a certain amount.

Mine makes that noise too. 98 4.6. Kinda sounds like a wire tie in the fan. Goes away after about a minute or two. What did you do to the starter to make it stop. How do you check the starter gear.

This may have nothing to do with your noise...but...when my '99 has only 2k miles on it...it started making a tapping/popping sound at startup and it would last almost until the engine warmed up. Believe me it was pretty loud! I went by the dealership to have them take a look at it and it turned out it was my belt!!??!?$#$%&*&$ yes my serpentine belt. The mechanic told me that he had had the same problem with his 97or98 f150. If a small rock/or pebble got into the engine compartment?????and got under the belt, it would tear one of the grooves on the belt and cause it to pop. I'm not sure how mine was damaged...but somehow it was...

All i know is that this noise was pretty loud, it was comming from the front of the engine and when they put a new belt on...it went away...

best of luck...
and as always,
keep us up to date with your fix....

___Weadjust, the dealer told me it was hanging up and he said all they would do is lube the starter gear. i decided to let it go and beleive it or not it went away by itself. I dont know if I couldve worn anything but, everthing is fine now.If your worried about it, pull the starter lube the gear and shaft and put it back on Good luck!
