Wrong radiator problem...how best to approach/handle dealer?
I'm glad this has been brought back to life as a class action suit. I own a 2001 that was built in April but delivered in June. Ford has repeatedly told me and the dealer that it doesn't qualify due to the May cutoff date. I have always felt that I paid for something I didn't receive. I spoke with one of the class action attornies last year who said that Ford had gotten the class action request thrown out due to it's "voluntary" action for those vehicles delivered before the cutoff date. I would suspect that the rest of us (2001's delivered after May) will now be getting a letter from Ford.
Any manufacturer has the right to change their product however, they cannot misrepresent/charge what they offer.
I never heard about this point, does anyone know if there was price reduction in the towing package when the radiator was no longer upgraded?
I'll bet this used to happen all the time with all manufacturers and they hardly ever got caught, ...the power of the internet.
Guy21, if May 1st is the date that Ford got it's act straight and you ordered before May 1, I'd think you are entitled.
If you made no move to acquire the Ford product until after May 1, then I think Ford may be right.

There were a lot of old posts on this board about this before Ford came up with the cutoff date and mailed letters to what I'm sure were the vast majority of people that bought the affected vehicles before the cutoff. That left myself and everyone else who took delivery of a 2001 with the tow package after May 4. Regardless of when the vehicle was produced or what the dealer or Ford's own literature might say. May 4 was the date Ford reprinted their literature and issued a buletin to dealers telling them what to say to customers regarding the change. There was never a price reduction. My dealer said he was told by Ford to put a radiator disclaimer in the window of these vehicles but that he did not hear about it until well after he delivered it to me.
Guy, I'm not trying to be smart or argumentative but, I'd like your opinion on when Ford should be able to cease 'making good' on this radiator deal.
Not just to cover your truck but, what do you think is fair?

Raoul - Fair Question
My opinion, anyone who:
Was told by their dealer that a HD radiator upgrade was included as part of the Tow Package.
Was given Ford literature (printed prior to May 4) by the dealer indicating the same.
Paid for the option at the price it was when this upgrade was included and believes he did not get what he paid for (or was overcharged, depending on one's point of view).
Bought a vehicle that was specified and ordered (even for dealer stock) with the tow option before May 4 when the sales literature was changed.
As far as I can see, this may only apply to 2001's built before May 4 and delivered afterward as mine was. But Ford has said it only applies to those delivered before May 4 regardless of build date.

Guy,
I fell in like you. I started researching to purchase my truck in April of last year, but bought in June. I'm almost positive I printed some stuff from Ford's web site indicating the heavy duty radiator comes with the towing package, but since I bought after the cutoff date I didn't get a letter.
At first I was a little peeved, but decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Plus, knowing my luck when the radiator was replaced something else would get screwed up in the process.

Corrected
I stand corrected, May 4th was indeed the cutoff date, not May 1.
I just made it, having bought on 27 April. As I recall, this issue got a lot of publicity the very next day after I bought the truck.
In my case, I indeed believed I was getting an upgraded radiator/cooling - it was the main reason I wanted the tow package, seeing as how I've never towed anything and likely never will.
Seems like if you committed to purchase before the source book was corrected, they should take care of you. In Ford's own words, most people are taking the cash - $100 is cheap as far as soothing feelings and engendering some loyalty. And if the dealer continued to misrepresent the option after 4 May, despite the source book correction, then the dealer should cover you but good luck on that.
Heck, I felt a lot worse seeing the pictures of a 2001 f150 Supercab all crumpled up in the 40 MPH head-on offset collision test. I must have had 5 different people e-mail me the story when it broke. Near-certain fatality for the driver. Air bag goes off late to top it off.
I'll give Ford their $100 back for the radiator if they'd make the SCab keep me alive in a 40MPH offset collision.

You're quite welcome !! The radiators exchange perfectly; the only difference is the core thickness in the center. The mounting, hoses, shroud, and AT lines fit exactly the same. Electric fans are a proven performance upgrade. They're simple to install. If you're considering underdrive pulleys, access is easiest with the radiator out. If you're considering electric fans, it's much easier to do at the same time as the radiator swap. Many of the electric fans use metal rods or plastic zip ties that go through the radiator core. These require accessing both sides of the radiator and are easiest installed when the radiator is out. Good Luck !!
