Post What is the air intake "silencer"?

In the middle of the big 3 mods to my 5.4L. Have the Superchip now, the Gibson SS is in the mail and until I decide on which air intake kit to install, I performed the cheapy version where I took the restrictive air box out and put just the clamp around a new K&N air filter. This helped alot, but I keep reading about the "air silencer" located between the TB and the MAF. Am I mssing something here..? I can't find anything else restrictive here. If someone knows what this is let me know, I would like to get rid of the "air silencer" also if it is restricting air flow.
Thanks, Winder

There is a resonator in the intake tube (the part from the MAF to the TB). If you take the assembly off and look at it from the bottom, you will see that there is an secondary chamber than runs alongside the main inlet. This is a Heimholtz chamber and has two purposes: to fill in holes in the torque curve by resonating and cancelling out intake honk.

All of the aftermarket intakes remove this from the system but you can't remove it from the stock part.

You can remove the air silencer. Several people have done it on this sight. Well over 100 i would imagine. Just do a search on "removing air silencer"...

Perhaps I should have said "on the 5.4l" since the 4.6 may be different.

If you were to remove the chamber you would have to cut up the plastic inlet piece and then find a way to cover the hole. Bad news when you are downstream of the filter.

I have a WMS tube which replaces the whole plastic assembly. I haven't noticed any difference in noise but there seems to be more power (and it looks good).

Question

Winder,
I was just wondering if you have any pictures of your "cheapy version" air intake? I have also done the Superchip and Gibson. Just trying to save for an AF1. If I could rig something up in the mean time like your talking about, that would be cool. Did you notice any difference after that mod? Thanks.

The 5.4 has the same setup. The whole procedure does require a bit of patience but it can be done if you take your time.

Thanks, guys for lining me out on the "air silencer". I'll have to take the tube off and check it out. My first thought is though, since I haven't destroyed the original assembly yet, I'll probaly hold off so I can slip it back on for any trips to FORD, and of course.. just get an AF1.
Sir James: The cheapy mod is just to take the right half of the air box off, clip the single tiny plastic spike on the bottom of the left half of the air box, slap the K&N onto the left half, duck tape the edges real good, then slide the clamp back over where the filter base and the left half meet and tie-wrap the hole thing to one the of holes you had to tug the right half out of. It takes about 15 minutes and adds a little power, although you just trades 2 square inches of cool air for 40 inches of warm air. Thanks, Winder
