Post magnacharger

I just received the Feb. 2000 issue of Four Wheeler magazine and it has an article about putting a MagnaCharger on a 99 F-250 w/5.4L Truck gained 55.7 horsepower and 59.4 lbs of torque. Looks like a pretty good setup. The one thing I found disturbing about the article, was that when they went to install the blower, they found out that the motor was a 98 model instead of a 99. this caused a few installation complications. This makes me wonder how many of you don't have the same year motor as your truck.

Thumbs up

Not to get off your question, but that horsepower and torque sounds low...that was rear wheel, right?

Yes that was at the rear wheels. The factory horsepower to the rear wheels was 146.3@4500rpm. It went up to 202.0@4250rpm. The factory torque was 223.3@3000rpm. It went up to 282.7@3250rpm. How does this compare to other systems on the market?

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Remember the GM 5.0 L fiasco of the 80's. If you bought a mid sized GM , Regal, Gran Prix, Cutlass, and it had a 5.0l engine you could have a 301 Pontiac, 305 Chevy, 307 Olds no matter what the Body make was and they were all installed at random. I seem to remember some lawsuits over this. According to the article the only problem this caused was some intercooler installation issues.

Question

wtd,

Did the article indicate what was different on the '98 vs the '99 ? My engine was built in Aug 98 for a 99 model year so the rocker sticker is obviously '98 but that doesn't tell me the model year of the engine.

146hp at the rear wheels sounds very low for a stock 5.4l.

WTD-
Does this kit have the large plenum that the compressor bolts to?

Do you have a web address for them? Do you have any pics?

Dave XP, the article didn't say what the differences were between the two engines, just that it had something to do with the intercooler installation. The magnacharger uses an eaton blower which sits under the new intake manifold. The gears run in synthetic oil and should be checked at 50,000 miles and average rebuild time is at 105,000 miles.

Thanks!

I wish there were some pics of the kit. I have requested more info. I will post when I hear from them.

I am confused because the application indicates '97-'99, split between the 4.6L and the 5.4L.

I am not as familiar with the 5.4L. I was unaware of drastic changes until '00. Can anyone identify changes for '99?

The 99 should have the 260 hp engine instead of 235 hp (new heads).

The Magnacharger is the same package that Allen Engine developed (originally for the 4.6l Mustang) and is selling.

It seems like Magnuson buys the rights to systems developed by others. They have a Toyota package that is the same as the one offered by TRD.

I notice that the price just went up, too.

Question

I'm very interested in the Magnacharger. Can anyone tell me exactly what comes in the kit. My original plan was to first go with Superchip, intake, and exhaust mods but that would seem to be inefficient if I'd end up changing everything after the blower install.

What are the recommended mods to accompany the Magnacharger in order to maximaize gains.

What is the best source for the Magnacharger?

Cool

the_Sandman,If you are setting up for a blower it is important to open up the intake and exhaust on your truck. You might also think about an aftermarket ignition system. As far as the chip goes, You can go ahead and enjoy it now and have it reprogrammed when the blower goes on, which last time I checked was an extra $125. or wait and have a custom program burned with the blower install. I spent a little over 1 year setting up for the blower which was fun. Don't rush into things and use all the info on this great site and you can't go wrong. I hope to see you around Tampa sometime.
Crash is building his new truck for a blower and if you follow his lead you will be just fine!
