Stutter at WOT
Stutter at WOT
When cruising in any gear, if I mash the gas, the truck will stutter and then accelerate normally. I noticed the lower the rpms, the worse the stutter. When I slowly give it gas, it accelerates very nice and smooth. I have 17000mi and have not replaced the fuel filter. I'm assuming it is clogged but I wanted to see if there are other opinions like a dirty MAF or Superchip improperly installed to look for as well. Thank you for your advice.
Actually, you probably have a common transmission shuddering problem. Some people claim that a simple fluid change or flush has solved it for them. Mine required a reprogram at the dealer. It was caused by some sort of error with the torque convertor. Mine had the same symptoms as yours. I could also feel a sort of vibration through the floor and gas pedal when it occurred. There was a slight noise, too. I have the 4r100 transmission, but others with the 70 say they have the same problem.
How many miles do you have? Mine started at 20k miles.

A shudder when you first mash it open is unlikey to be a fuel filter problem. Your assumption that it squirts in a bunch of gas (like an old acclerator pump, on a carb) is correct. However in my experience a partially plugged fuel filter will show up under (more) extended high fuel useage conditions. An exmaple would be if you held it at WOT for 5 or more seconds, or towed a heavy trailer up a steep grade.
Is this a new problem, or have you had it all along? There is some fancy programming in the PCM that makes the engine hesitate breifly when a sudden WOT occurs (spark is retarded for the shift). I wouldn't call it a shudder though, and you did. Probably something else.

Thanks for the responses.
I have a manual transmission, so it can't be that. Also, I think i would call it more of a hesitation but I never called it a shudder, a stutter is more like it.
I also have a Superchip which I assume would override any factory programming that retards the spark.
It has always been there. In fact, I had the same thing on my 1995 F150 4x4 with an inline 6, 4.9L. But I wasn't looking for a more power out of it like my V8 so I didn't care. Maybe Mike T. will know something in the cp chips forum. Thanks again
