Unhappy Knocking

I have a chip and I run super all the time (91 octane). I recently went on a short road trip and I punched it going over the grapevine and heard what sounded like the knocking and pinging you get from running bad gasoline. So I drove around for the last few days with my radio off and sure enough its been doing it when I get on it between 3500 and 4000 RPMS and up.

I have a chip so I'm running premium all the time. I have about 73k miles on it. I treat it right but I don't baby the thing by not punching it. I get on it whenever its necessary.

Any thoughts? Help?

Did you have(and tell the tuner) the Airaid before you got the chip or after? It will allow more air(going towards lean/pinging) into the eng. but I would think the MAF could compensate for that amount extra.

Also check for a vacuum leak(hoses, etc.)

Your eng. with 73,000 miles may have accumulated enough carbon deposits in the combustion chambers to increase the compression ratio which can cause knocking/pinging. Your dealer has a power cleaning system(Motor Vac?) that can dissolve these deposits. Some guys have injested Sea Foam Carbon Cleaner into the engine's combustion chambers thru the PCV hose. I took a 3' piece of vacuum hose that fit into the PCV hose and let the eng. vacuum(running at idle) pull the cleaner into the intake. Feed it in slowly at first and then fast enough to 'flood' the eng. enough to stall it. Let the cleaner soak for 5 mins.(not MUCH longer or the pistons might lock up) and then restart the eng. to clean it out. It might take more than one 'treatment'.

I added the Airaid before the chip. I'll give your suggestion a try (I'll probably let the dealer do it). I know this only started recently. It reminded me of when I was sixteen and I heard that sound right before I threw a rod in my VW bug.

Anyway, thanks Dan. I'll post the results.
