Post Reliability of a supercharged engine

I usually read about people putting superchargers on brand new trucks..
Is putting a supercharger such as a holly thunder roots type supercharger can cause a significant shortage in the life of an engine?
Also does warrenty on your tranny void because of it?

I apreciate any insight

The cold reality is: 1) Your motor is not designed to put out that kind of horsepower; bearings, etc. So, if you actually USE the extra horsepower, you will shorten the life of your motor and may even have dramatic, sudden failure. 2) You can kiss your warranty good-bye.

Thanks Crash, I won't be racing it every day, just on that occasion when that guy in his mustang pulls up next to me reving his engine. =o)
Stock motors today usually can break the 100,000 mile mark..
I'm just hoping that if i bolt on a supercharger; the engine will last at least 80k.. I like to go on long trips =]

I have personaly witnessed two 4.6L with the superchargers have failures. They both ran like the wind (more like a huricane), but both eventualy had the same failure. They snapped connecting rods, this after many full throttle blasts over the life span of the engine. But that is way to much for me. I am talking about 20K miles or less on each engine. I can believe that driven properly you could go a long ways, but not far enough for my $25K.

Its your truck, if you want the risk, go for it. But I know from personal experience, they will eventualy fail in a catastrophic manner.

Unhappy

ouch this looks bad for my supercharging plans,
I don't race cars, i just want that umph when i need it, but if it's going to prevent me from hitting that 80k mile mark... i don't think it's worth it..
anybody have a supercharged engine that lasted to old age?
Do i really have to sacrifice reliability for performance?

Thumbs up

I read something about a bypass valve that releases the boost when its not needed... I verified this at magnacharger's website.. Since i do alot of highway driving i guess this is a necessity.. the intercooler looks important too.. alot of those centrifugal SC don't come with a bypass or an intercooler.. I might just go with Crash's fav. Anybody know how much it costs for a 5.4 v8 . and does it need anything extra..(fuel pump, injectors. etc.)
