Thumbs down BRING BACK THE STRAIGHT SIX!!!!!

can someone tell me why ford got rid of the straight six? those things were indestructable. why doesn't ford come out with a dohc, 24-valve 4-liter+ six. big stroke, tons of torque and seven main bearings.....and every motor should have a 5speed (manual) option but that's an entirely different subject.

Thats a good question. GM has a new straight 6 and i think i heard something about a 15,000 mile oil change interval because it runs so cool. I love my straignt 6, 8 years and 108,000 miles, it runs like new and doesn't burn a drop of oil. I just wish i could find performance parts for it.

Yup the good ol I6 Although I must admit that the V6 sounds better and runs smoother from my experience anyway. So far so good with my 4.2...

that's exactly why i brought it up....GM has a new straight six....270hp frome 4.2 liters i think. ford should come out with an answer:
4.5 gas six or 4 liter turbodiesel six.

clifford has performance stuff for the 300 cu. in. six (headers, cams etc.)

The 300 inch would just plain not fit into the new (97) design truck style. Measure a straight 6 and you'll see that it measures about 30 feet from front to back.LOL.....
Also, I heard that Ford was under pressure to drop the I-6 as it was not friendly on fuel. (like my 4.2) yeah right!. I have had a few of the 300's and do prefer it to the 4.2 no discussion!!. It just dont fit!!.

I hear ya!
My I6 is the second one in my 1990 f150, the first one blew before I got it. The current one is out of a 1987 E250 van.
I love the I6, and like many, would love to find performance parts.
Mine is fuel injected, and I get 19mpg on the highway, and about 13mpg on the way to work and back.

I have only had mine about a month, but with 80,000 miles I just had it flushed, and put Mobil 1 oil and filter in her, I expect at least 120k more!

Their UNSTOPABLE!

Clifford performance does have stuff for the I6 but i don't have nearly as many options as the guys with the 5.0 v8.

There is no doubt about it the I6 is one of the best engines ever made. I think i'll rebuild mine at about 500,000 miles!

Say it again! I'd love to have another inline 300 ci engine. That was one strong motor. Especially with a granny gear.

I looked on a few things and couldn't find ford revamping a v-6 anytime soon. Anyone know if they are gonna do anything to answer the new GM 270hp six?

I have heard noises about a V-6 diesel for the F150. Ford had better get their collective butts in gear because GM is designing some killer drivetrains currently. I like the sound of my 4.2L better than my old 4.9L six, but the old engine was definitely smoother. Remember that the old six had 7 main bearings compared to four on the new V-6. I would bet on the old engine for longevity. But, the old 4.9L was low on horsepower and delivered about 2 mpg less than my new truck. Never used a drop of oil though.

The sad thing is GM's new inline 6 puts out more hp than our V8's 10 more than the 5.4 and over 40 more than the 4.6.

I totally agree that the I6 is a great motor. My work truck (Roofing truck) is a 1993 F-150 with the 4.9 I6. I put 20,000 on it in one year. The engine now has 192,000 miles on it. No matter how many times i thought I almost blew it while stuck in snow(4X2) the engine won't die. It runs like a charm. The engine isn't the most powerful but gets pretty good acceleration from 20-60. I don't know nothing about new 4.2L but the 4.9 is a great engine. Nothing like my 5.4L lol but a great engine that I believe on work truck will get 250,000 easy and possibly more!!

Why does everyone panic when they here Vortec(crap engine) straight six with 270 hp. What is the torque not very much correct??? Gm always stress's in there adds hp numbers but they don't stress the poor realiabily rating GM trucks get by "Consumer reports" compared to the recommed rating are fords get. Just my 2 cents and remember everyone is entitled to there own opinion

you might find this hard to believe, but if they were still making the big six, i probably would have gotten the plain old standard cab, standard bed I6 with manual, rather than the harley truck i have. the 5.4 is an amazing motor, but the big six was a beast! ford needs to get back to basics and start building pure trucks again.
