Is this common or should I be worried?
I bought a 1996 F-150 4x4 Reg. cab, 5L V8 about a month ago it has 60k miles on it and i've put on about 1200 miles and it's used about 1 qt. of oil. I was just wondering if this is common for a 302, or should I be worried about it?
That's a bit much consumption -- but there might be an easy fix IF you're also hearing detonation (aso known as pre-ignition, a.k.a. pining, a.k.a. spark-knock) while cruising or lightly accelerating.
If so (above), and if you can eliminate the pinging (like: by changing timing or using a higher octane gasoline), you might see a noticeable reduction in oil consumption.
Otherwise...
...good luck.

Its common for older engines with alot of miles to burn some oil but yours isn't all that old yet and has less than 100,000 on it so you might have a small leak some where.
I would say its out of ordinary-my 94 F150-5.0 has about 122,000 on it and it doesnt use any oil at all-also my 92 had the 4.9 (300) six didnt use any either-I sold it at 152000 miles and oil use was non exsistent which really surprises me since the 77 F150 with 351 M that I had constantly had to be checked to make sure there was oil in it
Did you put a full 6 quarts in when you change the oil also make sure the truck sits a while befor you check it. My 92 351 goes thru a quart ever 2k at 135k.

Mine is also 60k miles old and no oil consumption.

Interesting response. I've never heard that and engine that knocks (spark knock, or pinging), would also consume more oil..
How is pinging related to oil consumption?
Just curious.

Well, alot of people never take long enuogh trips to totally burn out all the water and volitile crap that builds up in the oil. They check their oil before the big road trip, and it's fine. 5 hrs of highway driving later, they are a quart low. It happens to people and they think their motor is screwed up. Maybe that's what he was thinking..

My wife's Explorer had 65K on it when I switched to Mobil-1. Now it has another 7K on it and absolutely zero oil has been burned. It is precisely up to Full on the dipstick after her 20 mile drive, each way, to where she works. The car IS warmed up and any moisture has been burned off. In other words, she ain't burning ANY oil.
For all those that say you'll have leakage after changing to synthetic, UH, it doesn't leak either!
Obviously, there are differences between vehicles and Ford says that "on average" some cars will burn some oil and that won't hurt anything. I agree.

My two cents .... I've been driving for nigh-on to 40 years. I've driven 1 vehicle that used that much oil .. a 1950 Chev that was sore need of an overhaul. Even had a '56 Chevy with 2 cracked pistons that didn't use that much oil.
I've also had a 70 Stang Fastback with the 302, a '72 Galaxie 500 with a 351 Cleveland, a '72 Ford F250 Camper Special with a 360, and now my Y2k Lariat with the 330 (5.4L). None of them have burnt oil. Ended up overhauling the 360, but in the processes found I could have gotten by with a valve job. Had 150K on it when I did that.
The only one I've had that came close was a 1984 Winnebago MotorHome with a Chevy 454, but then again, the 454 is notorious for leaking oil out the rear seal.
I would have a reputable mechanic give it a good going over. Will cost a few bucks, but better to be safe than sorry.

I have an Aerostar with 193,000 miles that uses or loses about 1/4 of a quart every 3000 miles. My Truck is about the same with 80,000 miles.
