Question about engine removal.
Question about engine removal.
This may be a stupid question but when you remove an engine out of an engine bay, where do you attach the chains from the engine hoist?
Most cherry picks I see on F-150's utilize a brackets with ears on them, the brackets bolt down to the heads. There's many different ways to do it though, when Ford pulls engines they usually pull the cab off the frame and they have a much more accessible engine after that.

when you say the brackets bolt to the heads what do you mean? you take the valve covers off then screw the bolts from the brackets where you would usually bolt the valve covers?

im thinking about but. the only reason i would do it would be to save a couple hundred bucks. but most likely i wolnt do it and leave it up to the shop thats dropping my new engine in.

Every engine I have pulled can easily be hooked up by a few bolts in the heads or some other fine or deep threaded hole. 1 on each side is all it takes. I have pulled everything frm a 272 to a 460 this way and never had any problems but with an L engine I might be a little worried to do it like that. You coud chain around the exhaust manifold if you can keep it on when you pull it that would be safer.
would you chain just one pipe on each manifold, or do two or three or all four? i would think going around the two middle pipes would be best just in case on slipped the chain wouldnt come off totally. do you know what i mean?

Spend the extra 200 bucks. Unless you have all the necessary tools and experience it just isn't worth doing it yourself. Heck, even if you have all the tools it still would be better to let the shop do it for the extra bucks. If they will let you watch them do it that would be cool then you could learn how they do it and pick up the necessary tips to do it youself in the future.

There are a number of ways to pull it, attach ears to bolts on the side of the head, or take the heads off and thread a head bolt back in through the chain. Some companies make adaptors that bolt to the intake.
