um..... how the h*ll do you put 5.4 heads on a 4.6, I am extremely perplexed. Well thats what my old truck has in it the trusty 4.6( Ive gotta keep that truck I got it when I was a soph in h-school weve had good times together and I will not let her go). I always thought that my 4.6 was shorter and that the only thing that would bolt on was the muffler, hey do you guys have any info on porting the T-body on a 4.6
a little help would help thumper still does get driven everyday.

HI!... YES! 5.4L "PI" heads will bolt directly onto a 4.6L engine. You have to run the 5.4L "PI" cams though to get the full potential and H.P of these heads. You must still use the 4.6L's camshaft timing chains as the 5.4L's are longer because of the deck height is taller on the 5.4L. If you do a 5.4L head swap on a 4.6L, you will most likely have to get a SUPERCHIP or have your existing SUPERCHIP reprogramed for the conversion. I would advise you call MIKE TROYER on the reprogram specifics. If you decide to go the 5.4 "PI" head route then spend the extra money and get SEAN HYLAND to do a STAGE 3 port and polish job on them. The STAGE 3 head work is worth another 55H.P over what the stock "PI" head will give you. You can easily gain 80H.P by doing both of these things. Hope this helps some of you guys out.

Question

How much might one expect to pay for a set of 5.4 heads, and where would be a good place to look?

FYI,

The Power Improved Heads are the heads from a 99+ Ford Mustang 4.6 SOHC engine. They will bolt onto a truck 4.6 engine. I am looking into which Valve cover thay use. On the 4.6 Trucks the Engines for the 1997-98 model year used either the Windsor or Romeo engine. For 99 poduction of all triton 4.6 was supposed to switch to Romeo. The Mustang uses a Romeo engine so there may be problems with the valve cover. The Windsor Valve cover has 13 bolts and the Romeo has 11. So count your bolts.

WOW! 80hp from new heads? im impressed, definately cheaper than a supercharger, and it produces almost as much, i think i will have to go this route (though i will eventually get the supercharger as well, but later) Way i figure, between the exhaust, heads, port/polish, superchip, and fipk, i should be gaining about 100hp at the fly wheel! im impressed!
so whats the goin rate for the heads and the port/polish, and havin 70000 km on my truck, would it be a good idea to port/polish more of the engine?
THANX

HI!... COOLSVILLE : You might be surprised on how much it will cost you to get that extra 80H.P. SEAN HYLAND MOTORSPORTS wants $2500.00(U.S) to do a STAGE 3 port and polish job. A set of new "PI" 5.4 heads will run you about $1000.00(U.S) and then you have to buy the cams, about $650.00(U.S). Then you have to pay someone to remove your old heads and install your new ones, BIG MONEY! Then there's all yhe gaskets and new head bolts required to do the swap. It would only be worth while if you are going to do a "GROUND UP" rebuild on another 5.4 or 4.6 donour engine, like I am.

Okay, guys. I'm not sure that I am clear on the header application for a 4.6, if you install the 5.4 P.I. heads?

Since I have already installed headers for my 4.6, would they fit the 5.4 heads?

Is there any real advantage to polishing the heads for street use?

For you guys who are thinking of putting PI heads on your '98 and earlier, you better buy an intake manifold as the ports are different sizes. Plus there is no manifold runner control on '99's.

HI!... BLACK F-150 OFFROAD : The pre-"99" intake manifold ports are smaller but can be corrected with a gasket port job. The ports are the same shape but just slightly smaller. They can be opened up to match the "99" "PI" heads. As for the manifold runner control or "IMRC" my "99" "PI" 5.4 has it. That's IF you are talking about the ABS plastic lower plenim that has the row of "BUTTERFLYS" controlling air flow through the upper plenim to the heads.
