signmaster,

your comments about the ingnition upgrade caught my eye. if it wouldnt be a hassle could you fill me in on what was involved in the install and what was the cost. i would appreciate any light you could shed on this subject for me. it looks like that may be something i would like to do for myself.

what were all the changes you saw as a result of installing the upgrade??

thanks for your time.

billycouldride: Call Summitt & order Jacobs part # 331711. Cost is about $290.00. It's a simple installation involving drilling a couple of holes in the radiator cross brace. The hookup after that, is a piece of cake. Jacobs, "DO NOT BUY FROM THEM," says change to a copper core plug, "Autolite is fine," and open up the gap slightly, mime is set at .070. You should also change plug wires, mine are custom made MSD. However, Holleys are available from Summitt. Just remember to turn headlamps on & disconnect negative battery terminal to allow your trucks computer to reset after you make any change...Mark

Cool

billycouldride,

Sorry about the delay, hadn't checked the post recently.

As Doorslammer states above, the install is a no-brainer. The hardest part was figuring out where to put the box, and changing the plugs. Summit has a better price than ordering direct. On your truck you might also want to look at the coil packs, I think Accel makes them.

To the point, I have done the ignition, pulleys (Ford Racing), custom intake with cold air tube, and like you a SS Gibson side swept.

If I could only do one it would without doubt be the ignition. I picked up about 15% mileage, noticeable low to mid range torque, better idle, and the truck just flat out runs better all around. Keep in mind my truck is a '95 302 4x4 with 3.31s. The lower geared or lighter trucks, or 5.4s probably wouldn't feel the low end increases as much, seeing how they make a lot of low end to begin with. Your 4.6 power curve is slightly stronger but similar to my 5.0. Check the other threads, some others here have the system. The new trucks have better ignitions stock, so the improvements might not be as great.

I only put about 12,000 miles a year on my truck, the mileage gain will pay for the unit in two years! Now THAT is bang for the buck!

Thumbs down

Page 11 of this months Consumer Reports has an article on the Platinum Gasaver (Feb 2001 issue). Both the EPA and Consumer Reports tested this and found no change at all in fuel economy after extensive testing in several types of vehicles.
