Question plowing

I am considering buying a f150 and im wondering how they are as plow trucks? will the 5.4 be strong enough and will the suspension be able to hold the weight of the plow?

Ford Recommends the 7700lbs payload package for plowing I think. The 5.4L will be fine for plowing however.

IMHO, you should look at something with a solid front axle. Not that an IFS wouldn't handle the plow, but a solid axle would be best. If you are going to make a habit of plowing, get something with a solid axle, only minor plowing, get what you feel is comfortable. I would definatly go with the 5.4. If you get an automatic, tranny cooler is a must.

The F-150 with the snowplow prep package will be fine for plowing, as would the 5.4 V-8. This would include a trans. cooler. and super engine cooling. That being said, I prefer my Super Duty F-250 for plowing snow. I've had IFS trucks with plows before and they work, but the IFS front suspensions have too many parts that can fail. I also prefer the leaf springs with the solid axle, which only the SD offers. YMMV

Phil,

What kind of plowing will you be doing? Chuck Wheat and WWBF150 are right, a solid axle is best for plowing. If you do get the F150 I would not get the LD. The 7700# has a bigger frame.

I've plowed snow with my own vehicles for 23+ years. The Super Duty is the best factory equipped plowing truck that I've owned, or seen. The GM "HD" trucks have the IFS, or Inferior Front Suspension, on their 4x4 trucks. They are not made for the abuse that plowing will put them through. Been there, done that. Personally, I don't think that the GM "HD" stuff is built as stout as the SD Ford trucks are. One look underneath the trucks would convince anyone of this.
