We aren't the only ones.............
I know the piston slap issue is a big one..... so I thought I would look around and see if any other manufacturers are suffering from the same problem.
Low and behold, it would seem as though the hypereutectic pistons, used in most modern engines..... may be the cause. It also does not seem as if anyone can figure out what to do about it. While it may not be a reliability issue, it certainly is a "satisfaction with vehicle" issue.
If you are interested in looking at the other side, here is a link to the Toyota Tundra site. They are having the same problems...... and are very unhappy also.

Just thought some may be interested.

94,
Great research. I have a theory. The 5.4 uses a fully floating piston pin. I believe that the stress that is excerted on the piston when it travels is too much. I am wondering if Ford were to use pressed pins like the Romeo 4.6 if it would cure the problem. I do not like the thought of a steel pin rubbing against an aluminum piston.
Just my WAG on the problem.
BTW, what did you do to the Explorer to get it to ramp 1000?

Me and my X cut and turned the front beams, built our own radius arms with heim joints, built our own dual shock mounts (running dual Rancho 9010's), and ordered custom coils (I call them my slinky springs). The truck also runs the Superrunner Steering (modified for the travel), and the long beam has been relieved for axle clearance. There is also a c-clip eliminator that we made. The front suspension has 19" of travel from full compression to full droop. The rear has 25" of travel.
Hope this pic gives you some idea. This is on Terminator 2 in AZ.
