4 valve heads?
4 valve heads?
I've got a 2001 5.4 SCrew and have a question about the valvetrain. Since the Navigator has 4 valve heads (making ~300hp), how difficult/expensive would it be to put them on my truck? How would I have to modify the ECU? I just read a thread which mentioned 3 valve heads in the next couple of years but, that would necessitate a trade-in and I'm not gonna do that.
Neal should be able to help you out on this one better than me, but I will give it a shot.
I would guess that you would also need a computer from the Navigator, possibly a new intake manifold, exhaust manifolds as well. You could also be looking at a new throttle body, larger injectors, and other intake/fuel injection components, new cam(s) would also be necessary I beleive.
So...even if you are mechanically inclined enough to tackle such a job it would be quite expensive based on the new parts needed. And if you would be looking to somone else to do the job it would be even worse. IMHO...you would be better off trading-in a few years down the road when the 3v heads are available.
But when it comes down to it I dont have alot of knowledge when it comes to these new engines. Im sure Neal will be alot more help.

this has been discussed a few times before. usually it is decided that it would be cheaper to buy a whole engine and computer than to just do the heads and have to buy all the other components to match.
