Oils
Can anyone tell me what the best dino oils are and which ones to stay away from? Are there any test data available to show which are truely the best.
I think consumer reports tested oils about 10 years ago (5w-30) castrol gtx was the top rated with pennzoil a close second.
Thanks for any help

I remember reading a while back that Pennzoil was rated very high.

Someone posted some test results of Dino oils compared with Synth oils. I think it was msparks. I wanna say that Quaker State scored very close to Synthetics.

Some very good dino oils are
conoco hydroclear http://lubes.conoco.com/products/powerd.html
Chevron

Pennzoil w/purebase:
http://www.pennzoil.com/TechData/pdsheet/domesticmarketing/engineoils/pdf/Multigrade.p df
All of these oils are group II refined oils and should do well for those not interested in going to synthetics

I use Amsoil Series 2000 0W30 synthetic & SDF11 filter. Change both every 10,000 miles...Nuff said...Mark.

Non-synthetic, I'd use Castrol 5-30 for sure. I wouldnt pour quaker state into anything that moves. Remember in the 80's when the "Black Death" was out there like the plague??. Quaker State cost me a 351-4V H.O. in the 83 F-150. Sure its probably all set now, but for me?,, no chance. I use Mobil 1 and the Motorcraft filter. I'd like to go Amsoil, but there's no place around here to get it. I dont want to drive 30 miles to buy some. You'd think it'd be on a shelf somplace!!. Oh well.
Love your Ford and change it often!!! (oil that is!)..........

Karick11...
i hafto agree.
If i used conventional oil i would use Castrol GTX. All my friends and family "i do their oil changes" use it and never had a problem since! Only other thing i will use in my truck is asmoil, but mobil 1 is cheap and every 3k is cool!
OILS ive used and read to AVOID!
Penzoil = cooking oil
Quaker state = penzoil
Quaker State reformulated = WD40
havoline & valvoline = only in my lawn mower
um.. cant say ive tried any others hehe
just my 2cents im sure its worth less than that lol

A guy I work with is a lubrication engineer. He has a fancy title that I dont recall this minute. He says that Synthetics are superior no doubt. But get this,, as for conventional oil, he would run Castrol as a first choice, and Mobil drive clean second. You know, the 75 cent stuff in the blue bottle!!.. It is supposed to be that close!!.. Hmmmmmmmmmm.... Also mentioned, Mobil cheapo oil and a good filter every 2500 miles would be great for people that want to change it often for a cheap insurence policy and only spend $7.50 on a change!!.. Hmmmmmmmmm...
If I went back to conventional, I'd have to consider.............. Blah blah blah.....

I used to use the Mobil conventional oil in my 92 ranger with great success. I used to get it on sale for something like 75 cents a quart.
I have heard that the drive clean is even better than the old stuff since in contains some group II basestocks
But I think my first choice would be the Conoco Hydroclear. It nears the performance of synthetics but for less than $2 a quart.
Oops, forgot to add, can't beat the warrenty too.

Moonpa,
I would have to agree with Karick11 on the Quaker State issue--I would use Tech 2000 before I ran Quaker State/Penzoil I don't care for at all!!
I would use Mobil Drive Clean, Valvoline All-Climate, and Castrol GTX (in that order) for using conventional oil. I use the Mobil Drive Clean in my truck, and have had no problems in the 30K I've owned the truck. Everything else I own gets Mobil and only my bike gets the Mobil-1(synthetic) b/c the book calls for a HOnda GN-4 which is a synthetic I believe. Everything else I run only Valvoline--but many people do like Castrol. I'll use it if I absolutely have too.
Just my .02 worth--hope it helped.

msparks....I run the Pennzoil pure synthetic oil in my supercrew and wouldn't think of using no other. Pennzoil has always carried a good name and have been using their product in my vehicles for a number of years...now the new member of our family (Supercrew 4x4) is getting the Pennzoil pure synthetic treatment.
A bit cheaper than Mobil 1 and ranks right up there with the best....glad to hear you mention Pennzoil on your list.

Castrol GTX 5w30 plus Mobil 1 Filter. I can't say I've ever kept a vehicle a very long time, but hopefully this F150 will be my "keeper."
I just think engines are the last things to go in vehicles these days . . you get rust, parts falling off, trim pieces fading . . all before the engine gives up.
Dino oil has been good all these years, I just don't think the synthetic is worth 4x the money . . for every 100,000 miles, that's roughly $600 bucks in oil alone (assuming 6 quarts, $3 per quart price difference, changed every 3k miles). It just doesn't add up.
