if an fqr 5.4l 2v is worth $5,000, think about how much our $35,000 trucks would be then, ford will have to start offering 25 year morgages on these trucks. I like the idea but i am sure ford will add a nice price tag on top of it

Thumbs up

Doorslammer69, I think it's a great idea for Ford to offer this engine for the F150. However, I can imagine various reasons why they haven't yet:

* they probably have limited capacity to build this more advanced and complicated beast

* they might think that most pickup owners don't want to have a truck that requires premium fuel -- a point that might turn off many buyers from spec'ing this engine

* they might think that the specs for the 4V, DOHC 5.4L V-8 are too close for comfort to the V-10 product in the super duty world

I think, however, that even if demand is limited (due to the most likely sky-high price and premium fuel requirement), that's OK, then there won't be such a shortage of these engines to worry about (if that's even an issue). AND, importantly, from a marketing perspective, Ford would have an engine line-up more comparable to the GMC products -- horsepower-wise. Also along this line, offering such an advanced engine design looks good against the old fashioned pushrods of the competition and the already hi-tech (but some would argue underpowered) Tundra V-8.

So I think Ford should offer this engine because it gives F150 buyers more choice, while giving Ford more marketing bragging rights due to the increased horsepower and the advanced, high-tech design.

A footnote to this: I read somewhere that Ford will offer a 3V version of our 5.4s in the next year or two. Two intake valves for better combustion, aimed at lowering emissions, and I suppose increasing power as well. I'm no engine expert -- so would this mean that a 3V per cylinder engine would need to be DOHC or can it be controlled still by a SOHC? Anybody know? I say, just offer the engine already out there -- the 4V, DOHC. I bet they could tune it to run on regular unleaded with only a small decrease in output. My long-winded opinion.

Cool

HI!... DOORSLAMMER69 : I think FORD'S should offer the 5.4 4valve in our F-150's. Then all you would have to do is install a SUPERCHIP, EXHAUST, AIRAID KIT and you would be at LIGHTNING power. By the way the 5.4 4 valve is simply just a regular 5.4 with the MUSTANG COBRA's 4-valve heads and set-up on top of it. Nothing SO speical about it. You also don't need to run premium fuel with the 5.4 4-valve unless you have a SUPERCHIP installed.

How much time and money would be involved in changing a regular 5.4 engine into a 5.4 4 valve DOHC? How much power would you expect, has anybody done this yet and also would you need a new computer?

Would you be able to supercharger the 5.4L 2v engine with the same supercharger as a 5.4 4v or would the supercharger need to be made for the 5.4 4v?

Post Navigator 5.4l DOHC engine

Since we all know that FoMoCo watches this site, how about this? Who would like to see Ford include this engine as an option on the F150???????????????

Neal: The DOHC 4V 5.4 in the Lincoln Navigator requires premium fuel. I'll guess that when they tuned the Nav's engine they tuned it to max the horsepower, extra torque be damned. So they took their stock chip and gave it a few superchip properties. They just wanted to be able to say "300 hp" for psychological purposes, and to be able to do that, they had to require premium fuel. However, I bet they could re-tune it for greater torque and regular gas (for folks who don't want to use premium). Then if you strapped on your suggested mods (+ the superchip of course)it would do all you suggest, and be one sweet ride.

Rhyno: I would think that it would be so expensive to modify a 2V SOHC to a 4V DOHC, that it wouldn't be worth it. I could be wrong. Any opinions on this?

With more valves you get more horsepower but it usually is at higher rpm's. Back when I was riding rice rockets and they went from 2 to 3 valve hp peak jumped from 5000rpm to 7000 rpm, with 4 valves to 9000rpm, and with 5 valves to 12000rpm. I just can't imagine a truck engine reving 12,000rpm pulling the grapevine, they just won't build it 'cause people won't buy it. That's probably why Harley made such a comeback in the 90's people didn't want to rev the **** out of a motor to get on the freeway. Just my .02 cents.

HI!... SCOTT XLT : I know a guy that owns a NAVIGATOR with the 5.4 4-valve and he has never run premium fuel in it. He has always run 87 octain in it and never had a problem. He told me that he has never seen anything that says he has to run premium fuel in it.

Red face

Hi Neal -- You are absolutely RIGHT! I stand corrected.

I read somewhere, possibly in a magazine review, about this engine requiring premium gas - 91 octane. Before I wrote my post above, I checked with Carsdirect.com, because their site is so cool, and fun (try it to price out dream cars and trucks, it's great). Their website includes specs for each car, and their spec for gas for the Nav "confirmed" that the 4V 5.4 required premium fuel.

So just now I checked Lincoln's website (http://www.lincolnvehicles.com/navigator/# - click on specifications), and it says that it requires regular unleaded (87 octane). I guess that shows I better check my facts a bit more thoroughly before I get too sure about things.

Thanks for the catch - guess this means that fuel requirements play no part in this decision by Ford.

The compression ratio for the Navigator 5.4L is 9.5:1 so that's safe enough for 87. The peak torque is 355 ft-lb @ 2750rpm. That's virtually the same as the 5.4L in the F-150. However, the peak horsepower is 300 @ 5000rpm which, as was mentioned, is due to better breathing with four valves per cylinder. All said and done, I'd like to see that engine offered in the F-150 along with a diesel. A diesel is going to show up in an Explorer in the next couple of years, why not the F-150, which after all is a work truck for many people.

Yes....more power, probably better gas mileage.

sundayniagara69,
Why do you need two identities, assuming you are also doorslammer69, and not just thanking him for a post?
