Hi, I just went offroading and my underhood is a complete mess, and I am going to be putting my FIPK on pretty soon, within the next 2 weeks, and I want to be installing it with a clean engine. Will it ruin anything if I just spray the inside down with a hose?

Something i would like to know myself.
I would assume if you coverd all the electrical components with plastic or such and make sure everything is seald it would be fine. Only thing i also wonder is, if you do this should you do it while the engine is cold? I ask this becuase if the engine is hot cold water on it could warp or something more extreme.

Be real careful!!!!!! Only try this if the engine has cooled down to be able to touch it with your hand. Than try only to wash areas with as little water as you can.

I wash mine at the car wash all the time with NO problems...I use the high pressure spray setting too. If its metal I get real close with the wand but I try to avoid hitting electrical stuff like the alternator.

I haven't had any probs washing my motor, but use car wash soap in water on the hoses, air cleaner, battery, etc and hose it down with a gentle spray. I wouldn't use a pressure washer, especially around the plugs or distributor caps. Do it at home with a cold motor. But start it right away afterwards. With my old Ranger, if you didn't start it afterwards, the water would seep into ignition components and would damn hard to start. I always found it best to start it right away, let it warm up to steam off all the moisture. Used to use GUNK engine cleaner. Haven't yet with the F150 cause the block isn't greasy and none of th engine seals are leaking.

 

I go to the quarter car washes all the time, I have never had a problem, on any of my cars.
I do hot soap, then rinse, no problemo

 

According to the Lightning FAQ page, you are NEVER supposed to use a high pressure spray on your engine. Also, make sure the engine is cold, for steam can get to places that you don't want it, and it will cause problems. Read on:

HI!... I power wash my engine compartment about once a week with a high power washer. My local power washer also has engine degreaser that comes out of the wand. All I do is remove my external K&N filter and cover the pipe with a plastic bag and elastic band. Then I simply power wash it. I've done this when the engine is cold and hot and never had a problem after 2 years. Just one warning though, try not to direct the power washer spray directly into the alternator or you can wash the grease from the bearings. This will cause the alternator to squeek eventually.

I spray everything wil full strength simple green let it soak a few minutes and just rinse with the hose with a gentle spray. Works Great and have never had any problems. I do avoid the altenator and try to avoid as many electrical connectors as possible.

My '97 and '99 Owner's Manuals had information about washing our engines. I'd assume later models also have this information in their manuals. There are places you should cover with plastic (I use plastic grocery bags) to keep dry.

There's a lot of information in the various manuals.

 

I use high pressure every time,never had a single problem. I just wrap the K&N filter with plastic groc. bags. Use Gunk,or equal quality stuff. spray liberally with tire
dressing after it's dry and wipe off the excess. Looks SO good!!,,,98

Best engine cleaner out there right now is a product called "Simple Green"

it works like no other cleaner out there, it is not a chemical based product but a organic based which is nice on all plastic's, rubber and paints....but it eats away at grease and dirt!

Buy a bottle and make yourself happy!

 

My engine cleaning method looks very similar to 98SCREAMER. No problems up to date.

I wash the motor every time I was the truck, I use simple green in spry bottel. No high pressure wash though. never a hot moter..

 

First I put a coat of simple green on the engine, then i put armoral tire shine over that, then i wash it off with the water hose about 1/4 on. it looks like new, when people see it they ask me if its a 99 model
