Post Oil Performance Comparison

There has been alot of discussion lately about the quality (or lack thereof) of various brands of motor oil. Can anyone point us to some published independent tests which will give us an idea as to how each brand stands up?

Question

Ive heard nothing but good things from asmoil users. Personally i will stick with mobil 1 5W30 synthetic becuase i change my oil and filter every 3k and its a hassle to order asmoil each time i need an oil change. but... most asmoil users run their oil around 8-10K miles so they wouldnt hafto deal with as often as every 3k unless you REALLY baby your truck heh.

Personally... for the price.. and easy availbility i would just pick your self up a case "6qts" of mobil 1 5-30 synthetic $26 bucks and mobil 1 filter $10 bucks. Every 3k and your home free!
So after tax its about 40 bucks well
actually 39.78 "autozone price" hehe i changed my oil yesterday before the rain hit here in california. In my opinion its a DAMN good oil & filter. Also 40 bucks for every 3000k is cheap insurance if you ask me

One other quick note. I find it interesting on asmoils website that they dont include mobil 1 synthetic in their test or graphs of any kind... hmm interesting.

Thanks for the replys, guys, but I already use synthetic. This isn't another "is synthetic worth it?" post. I'm just looking for an "independent" comparison of the major brands.

In the 4 ball wear test (ASTM D4172)

Mobil 1 0w30 scored .607mm
Mobil 1 5w30 scored .589mm

Amsoil 0w30 scored .373mm

Test was performed at (40KG pressure @150C, 1800rpm for 1 hour duration)
This tested was done by an independant Lab in 1999.

Hope this is the information that you were looking for. It can be found on the back of a Series 2000 0w30 bottle.

You don't have to get riled with me, I'm just trying to help.

Some of the stuff on the website is old. The don't update it as often as some of the spec sheets and bottles.

So are we cool?

Here is a URL that compares most of the synthetic oils using the FOUR-BALL WEAR TEST (40 kg pressure @ 150 C, 1800 RPM for 1 hour duration. They were tested by an "independent lab."

http://www.webcom.com/cburnell/synth...tso1199pg1.jpg

Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30 0.373
Penzoil 5W-30 0.540
Castrol Syntec 5W-50 0.576
Mobil-1 Tri-Synthetic 5W-30 0.589
Quaker State 4X4 10W-30 0.595
Mobil-1 Tri-Synthetic 0W-30 0.607

The smaller the number the better the protection.

I am looking for the best fuel efficiency, wear protection and the most economical solution for my maintenance. The series 2000 oil is a 35000 mile / 1year oil. I never used synthetic before but I am going to give Amsoil a try.

Based on these numbers, Pennzoil is practically as good as amsoil. So why change over?

The test was probably done with new oil and does not test for oil with 3000 or 5000 miles on it. Is this correct?

moonpa: You're right, the nubers are fairly close. However, that's where the similarities end. Amsoil 0W30 is engineered for extended drain periods and Pennzoil is NOT. Further, Amsoil backs this in writing. Remember Mobil1s first commercials? NEVER CHANGE YOUR OIL AGAIN!!!!!!!!! Man, did they ever get their butts burned with that one and now recommend regular oil/filter changes. Did you ever wonder why??? Could it be that Amsoil synthetics really are higher quality??? In this case, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR...Mark

Question

Guys, You may have noticed the word "independant" in my original post. If I wanted Amsoil numbers, I could simply go to their site. I won't question Amsoil's quality, but I would like to see some objective test results.
