Question What kind of oil and filter???

Well Ive had my truck long enough that its time for an oil change. What kind of oil should I use. I now have 25000 miles and had thought about switching to synthetic but Im not sure Im convinced w/ having to check it and all, plus its pretty expensive, especially for a college student. In the past I have always used purolator filters and valvoline all climate oil. Are these any good? Is the ford motorcraft stuff any good? I definitely want to put high quality stuff in and was wondering if anyone had recommendations. Thanks for any help!

I just put my first Amsoil in my 97 f150. Amsoil is supposed to be good oil for our trucks. In the past I have always used Quaker State oil and Fram filters. If all the claims on Amsoil are true I think that I will be very Happy with it.

Cool

I have had good experience with Mobil 1 synthetic, in both my 95 toyota camary and my 90 ranger, my SuperCrew will get Mobil 1 when the new 5w-30 is available.

Read somewhere that we should stick to one brand, there is sometimes a chemical reaction from one brand to another (diffrent additives), so when changing from one brand to another we should change within 1000 miles, to avoid driving with degraded oil, then after that keep your normal oil changes.

Oil filters check this:

Supercrew-new,

What oil does your owners manual speck for your engine? My 2001 XLT 5.4 says 5w-20 for the new Triton engine. Is it ok to put 5w-30 into an engine that is meant to run on 5w-20? Just wondering because I want to go to synthetic, but I don't know much about synthetic oils.

Thanks

Cool

My Form manual and the engine oil cap specify the 5W-20 Oil, I hear that any Triton engine made after July 2000 requires 5W-20. My 2001 SuperCrew with assembly date code is 10-4-2000.

I am still confused about Ford requiremenst for specification WSS-M2C153-H, (the "H" is for 2001 motors), I do not know what changes Ford made to the engines, some of the F150 members suspect that it is just to improve corporate fuel mileage, and/or to get better emitions (LEV) ??.

Honda has been using 5W-20 Oil for the past 3 years, so it could a "me too thing".

So I hoping that Mobil 1 releases a 5W-20 Synthetic soon, I have about 2600 miles in my SuperCrew, I will change to Synthetic around 10K-12K miles

I changed Motorcraft oil/filter at 2K miles, I will switch to conventional Mobil 5W-20 as soon as I can find it (not at Wal-Mart yet)

Another choice for me would be the 5W-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic, but only if I am sure is OK to use it ???. (Mobil 1 is easy to find).

I have used Mobil 1 for more than 10 years, my 1990 Ranger got fresh Mobil 1 every 6K miles, new filter change at at every oil change and another filter 3K miles later (ad ~ 0.5 quart oil oil).

Checkout the thread on "Some answers about oil analysis", Jan. 18, 2001, this thread was initiated by "Oil Man", he has lots of oil knowledge.
