Post Buying a new engine!!?????!!!!????!!

O.K. Looks like I am buying a new engine to replace the 4.6L with 135,000 miles on it. Afraid to put new heads on and blow out the bottom. Where can I get a good engine? I don't really want a piston slapp'n rebuild from Ford. Oh, this is to replace a '97. And can I put a 5.4L in it's place? Is it a better engine. Any input would be appreciated.

Hey if you want more power and don't mind work on the truck go with a Cobra or Navigator engine.

What happend to the current engine in only 135k miles??
Was it a rental truck, or worked big time hard, or run without oil?

Here is the latest on the saga of the engine. To bring you up to speed the engine has been experiencing coolant in the #8 sparkplug cavity. After 3 trips to the local dealer and nowhere closer to a solution we went to an outside repair shop. With the help of this site and the many helpful and informed people here(especially "pkrwuds" and "birdman") we were able to encourage the shop to do a thorough examination of the engine before replacing the engine or even the heads. What it all comes down to we think is leaking intake manifold gaskets and possibly bad intake manifold.

I don't think I would change the engine if it is OK other than the intake or gaskets. I believe I read the whole engine goes for 3 to 4K$.

redlariet - Your definalty right, it would be much cheaper to replace the intake and gaskets, but what if that isn't the problem?

dmailman - u should look into just changing the intake and gaskets, if that is the problem it would be more economical and just plain easier. In these new cars it's alot more then bolting up a new engine to the tranny, if your replace the 4.6 w/ a 5.4 you need to find a 5.4 computer to go with it. Not sure if all 4.6's share the same computer though.

Don`t know how reliable a source this is but there is one on EBAY that I saw tonight going for 1,000 so far. I believe it had 33,000 miles on it. I don`t know if I would buy a engine this way but it was there.

I think the gasket and intakes would be the first step I would take before engine swap.
