throttle body and sensor cleaning
throttle body and sensor cleaning
I was planning on cleaning out the throttle body and a few sensors but have since sort of chikened out until I figure a few thigns out.
I have a can of Gunk throttle body cleaner that is safe for the coatings. My question is will the truck run with the intake tube detached (not completely remove, just pushed over enough that you could spray this stuff in there and work the butterfly or would I damage something and get a CEL?
Also I was going to clean the MASS with windex but those elements look mighty small and fragile sitting back in that little orfice.
Lastly I was going to pull the IAC and the EGR valve off and clean them. What solvent should I use? I figured regular old carb cleaner but read in Haynes that solevents of any type could damagethe diaphgram. I will probably have to put these off to another day as I forgot to pick up any gaskets for them. As anybody tried to reuse the originals? Can just the gasket be bought at any parts store or do we still have to go to Ford?
I'm just trying to clean things up and have my motor running as well as possible. I have a unnormaly loud PCV valve (rattling)which is brand new. I have some pinging issues. Seems like power may have gone down hill slightly. I have other problems but I feel they are more transmission related than engine.

Here's an update to todays events.
Went ahead and tried to clean the TB. No luck at all, everytime I tried to start the motor with the air tube off the motor would stall. I guess it has to do with some kind of pressure differation. I thought about doing as the can suggested and spray for 10 seconds reattach the intake tube and then run motor for 60 seconds. But, that would take forever to empty the can doing it that way. Does anybody have any better advice on this.
I did get to windex the MASS and it was not even the slightest bit dirty. My K&N seems to be doing it's job. Another interesting note is I did not see any extra or smaller chambers in my intake. While it does change sizes, I did not see any indication of a second chamber.
I still need to know what you guys clean the IAC, EGR, and DPFE sensors with as I will be getting gaskets and performing this later. The PCV valve is still making a loud rattle too.
I also pulled the driveshaft out to grease the slip yoke and check the u-joints. With 135K on them they seem to still be in great shape. Smooth, no play in or out of the truck, no play up and down at rear diff, at the slip yoke end it seems that the pushing up and down on the tranny will move the tranny/t-case factions of an inch. I am not for sure if it would be in spec or if it should be rock solid. So that leads me to think the clunk and the vibration I have is in the tranny (TC?) or the rear diff (pinion bearing, which should've had up and down play if it was bad).

I wouldn't think the motor would run without the airfilter snorkel attached because the computer is reading the airflow from the MAF, disconnecting at the TB would really confuse it.
I haven't done any of the IAC, EGR, or PVC cleaning yet. I too would like to hear from any experts who have done those items.

I replaced the original pcv valve in my truck with one of the cheap generic ones from Advance Auto and it makes the rattling noise too. I don't know if one from Ford would rattle the same way or not. So far I've just put up with it. My truck is pinging too and nothing seems to help it.

I came to the same conclusion when I was discussing it with a guy at work. With the air intake off the engine can not pull the aif through the tube across the MASS. When there is no reading from the MASS, or not the right A/F at the throttle body the motor can not/will not start. I have abandoned cleaning it right away for the tought I may just break down and spend the 85-125 bucks it costs to have it "Motorvac'd" or in laymens terms decarbonized by a professional. I know a few have cleaned it one way or another, one might be 98screamer, can't find where he talked about it. I know one way is to spray for 10 seconds reattach tube, run eninge for 60 seconds and then repeat till can is gone.

If you got it at Advance (which is where I work) it must be the same Purolator one I have. I have never had a problem like this before and no one has ever came back in to complain about a problem iwth their PCV rattling abnormally. I am pretty sure that the first Purolator PCV valve didn't make the noise. I went ahead and changed the PCV this year just to have a fresh one there. About 3-5K later it's making noise. I even tried to put the old Purolator valve back in there and it didn't solve the problem. I am thinking something is clogging up or something is creating some kind of wierd vacuum. Which leads back to the above paragraph.
