Lash Adjusters ?

Okay I took my 5.4 L Supercrew in for a rattle on startup problem. I talked to the engine guy there and before he started the truck he said (It's probably the lash adjusters) so I was thinking whatever just fix it... So they ordered parts but I don't know what they ordered Just 16 of one part number and 16 of another.
Well what I am getting at is what are lash adjusters I assume it's just a fancy term for Overhead Cam lifters.. It that right? And why did they order 2 part numbers what could the other one be?

I don't know what your engine uses in particular but lash adjusters are usually some sort of shim that goes on the top of the lifters or on the top of the valve stem. The general idea is to take the "play" out of the valve train. If you have a 2 valve per cylinder engine and it's a V8 he would need 16 for the left side and 16 for the right side.

For a figurative, not technically exact illustration:

In pushrod engines, the cam follower (aka Lifter) provides the lash adjustment -- whereas in your engine, the valve is on one end of a rocker, the other end is the lash adjuster, and the cam pushes in the middle of the rocker. Since the valve is easier to move than the lash adjuster is to compress, the valve opens.

The lash adjuster is a hydraulic gizmo -- which functions exactly as did the hydraulic lifter (with respect to 'pumping up' to remove any slack, er lash) -- except that it does not move along with the cam -- or anything else, for that matter.

The cam followers are made by Eaton -- and include some 17 ( or is it 7 -- I can't remember) needle bearings in the roller -- and it is important to keep the oil filtered, as the clearance in the lash adjuster is real small -- and you don't want crud plugging up the things.

Advice: change your oil -- and use a good filter.

The full name I am seen them listed as is hydraulc lash adjuster lifter. To me Y2K 7700 4x4 explained it perfectly and even included some thigns I didn't know (made by Eaton part).

On a side note I think I actually had one lash adjuster to get clogged or loose it's prime one time. At startup there was a very loud tapping noise, only after driving for about 3 miles and getting the engine hot did it quit, upon restartup when I got home it did not happen again. I then added some Gunk ValveMedic ran it for 100 miles the changed the oil. Never have heard it again. I have heard a abnormally noisey PCV valve since then and the could have been the problem the hole time.
