Question Check Engine Light

Anyone haveing problems with their check engine light coming on all the time? 2000 Ford F150 Supercrew, 5.4 ltr engine, full tow package.
First time was out west in August...light came on, mileage dropped to 7 mpg w/ trailer. dealer in Rapid City reset the light. Came on again 1000 miles later, in Pittsburg, KS. Dealer changed one plug and a plug wire, reset the light.
Has come on 13 times since, each time the computer sez it's a plug, changes ONE plug (in one case changed 'em all) and restes the computer. OK for a hundred miles, then back on. Only performance drop noticed is mileage goes to hell...
Ideas????

What mods do you have? I have the K&N FIPK kit on my truck that came loose. Hence, more heat got into the engine then the check engine light came on. It took three days to figure that one out...

maybe its the coil pack to that plug. Is it the same plug each time they replaced it?

How about this one My Service Engine Light has come on six or seven times. As a mattter of fact it is on right now. The truck never shows any codes. The dealer told me the first time that because of the K&N they could not diagnose it. So I put the stock air cleaner back on, the light has turned on 5 times since. They keep resetting the light but it keeps coming back.
The dealer tells me it emisions related, and some times some trucks are just more sensitive than others. Well it is going back in Monday, this time I have the Ford rep comming to look at it. They think I might have a small vacuum leak. I am about ready to file a lemon law case against Ford.

Even though my sig shows a K&N and a chip neither one has been on for a while.

Oh i know this feeling. My light came on last January about a year ago, it didn't go off til september. It took that long to find the cause.
My first question is:
How do you drive and what through?
If your answer has anything to do with water & sand besides rain, then i might know your problem already. If not, see below.
My light came on after a trip to the beach. Water had splashed up on some electronics and messed em up(salt corrodes- did you know this?! =) ). Sand had gotten in the intake manifold and messed it up and my spark plugs and wires were also shot from the water (although they didn't start giving out til a little later). I also mud a lot, mud clogged my intake manifold and i began running off 5 cylinders. Performance was shaky and gas mileage extremely poor!
If this describes you in any sort, i'd get your spark plug wires and the plugs examined and or replaced. They also may be dirty causing a misfire which causes bad mileage and performance, and can be easily fixed. If you don't offroad, then i would still suggest you check your wires and plugs. "Electric Coils" have gone out on a couple of my friends F150s too, and they are 99&2000 models- id consider checking into that. Intake manifold is probably ok depending on if you offroad much. Ford never did find the problem with mine, just kept turning the light off and charging me for it, a offroading friend of mine located the problem(s) in about 30 minutes and i took it to ford and its been great ever since. Hope this helps, if you have questions, email me.

there was a problem with the 99 having an AC leak water onto something (maybe the coil). This caused a check engine and rough idle. The solution was to tie the hose back away from the part, eliminating the condesation dripping on the part.

Do the check engine lights ever come on just because the odometer hits a certain mileage.
My son's 96 Probe's light just came on. It's a few miles short of 30,000. Everything seems to be running perfectly.

Kenster, I have know many people's lights to come on and 30,000 miles is around an average time because its about the same time as a factory recommended tune up or whatever. They sometimes set em like that so you will come in and pay them to tune up your car. I know BMWs and high dollar cars do it every 10-15,000 or they used to, so that they would always get the car owner's business. Anywayz, i think it is fairly common, but you may want to check it out. My light came on, and 4 months later, i was running off of 5 cylinders (see story above)...but on a probe, i think its normal. My .02 cents...

Exclamation

Just to share my thoughts on this. First time my CEL came in was that problem with the damage coil because of water dripping over it over a period of time. The second time was a fried MAF. The third time came for about 150 miles and went out.

At that point I was over the 36k miles so I decided to buy an Actron Scanner to get my codes since reading the codes at my nearest dealer is $55.00/code. The CEL came in again a few days ago so I connected my scanner getting a 0442 code. That's an EVAP code (evaporative system) and immediatly I remember that when filling the tank there was a small leak in the vent hose that I was going to fix by thigtening the hose clamp. But days went by with no action from me so the sensor did its job. It detected a very small leak in the gas tank. That's the reason some of you will get the CEL when the gas cap is not properly closed.

I am happy with my scanner and on top of that I can erase all the messages (codes) from the computer. It's been OK for a couple of days so I think it worked.

While the problems are light I will be able to get the code and fix. If I have to go to the dealer for a major fix, at least I will have information beforehand that will help when they start to BS.
