Chip for 4:10gears NOT Superchip? dyno results
HI!... RANGERBOY : Welcome to the board! Go with a SUPERCHIP. Give MIKE TROYER a call at PERFORMANCE PRUDUCTS. I have had extremely good results with his chips. You can find his phone # under his threads in the COMPUTER CHIPS section. Tell him NEAL "THE H.P FREAK" sent you. Hope this helps you out.

Well gentlemen, I am about to ask a question and I want everyone to think about it and then answer. Oh by the way, this is going to be a long one.
Let's start with 3 different trucks, the 1st one, mine (see sig. below), the 2nd one, a 2000 F-150 E.C., S.B., 4.6L, 5 sp. 4X4, air intake mod., headers, borla exhaust exiting infront of rear wheel, superchip, winch on the front end and then the 3rd one is a 1999 F-150 R.C., S.B., 5.4L, automatic, 4X2, air intake mod., air/temp sensor adjustment, headers, true dual with flowmaster exiting in front of rear wheel, transmission kit, electric fans, superchip, power pulleys, transmission electric fan, ported T. Body, 4:10 rear gears.
Now if you know your trucks, mine weighs in around 5000 lbs., the 4X4 is around 5300 lbs. and the 5.4L is around 4500 lbs. Who do you figure will win in a drag race as the trucks sit, when the 4X4 and I race, and then the 5.4L and I race ???
Well let me tell you, and oh RAND pay attention because the proof is about to show up !!
First race, 4X4 and I:
Reaction: 0.65 0.888
60 ft.: 3.444 2.551
330 ft: 7.853 7.440
1/8 ET: 11.847 11.438
1/8 MPH: 61.64 61.80
1000' ET: 15.244 14.850
1/4 ET: 18.084 17.781
1/4 MPH: 80.93 77.32 Look familiar JMC
Yeah I know, you're saying how the he!! did I beat the 4X4 when his speed is fastest and I don't have a superchip. Well I have an auto. and he has the 5 sp., he missed the shift into 3rd gear. At the finish, he was pulling away from me big time and I figured that I had lost till the slip came in (first timer error). Now with the winch off and the truck just a shade lighter, he has ran 16.3 or 16.5 in the 1/4 mile.
Now for the second match, the 5.4L and I:
Reaction: 0.797 0.876
60 ft: 2.178 2.537
330 ft: 6.245 7.444
1/8 ET: 9.599 11.455
1/8 MPH: 72.60 61.54
1000' ET: 12.516 14.872
1/4 ET: 15.001 17.804
1/4 MPH: 91.67 77.30
These figures were timed by TSI System 2000 Plus at Milan Dragway.
Now, if memory serves me correctly, he had 27" tall tires on instead of the normal 30" tall tires and he also had problems with an error code that showed up on the odometer. He originally had a best of 14.5 that day which was his first run. Oh and yes I did see the time slip for that run as well. A week later, he went to another drag strip that a bit better starting line and he pulled a 14.53 off. The proof is in the pudding, there are the figures. So did your answer match the solution or not ??

HI!... IZZY EDDY : Actually that day at MILAN DRAGWAY my fastest time was 14.72E.T. I ran 14.53E.T at LONDON DRAGWAY. When I ran you I had my 30 inch tall tires on and I was trying "MANUALLY" shifting the auto. I ended up hitting the rev limiter twice during the 1ST to 2nd upshift. That's why I got the SLOW 15.00E.T. It was fun racing you, and I can't wait till the next MILAN MEET. Were going to try to get this truck to run a 13.9 by the end of next year. I still have a TON of H.P making mods to do to this thing and some suspension work to do. My goal for this truck is to get it to run a 13.8, and then I'm going to supercharge it.

Sorry Neal, but my dyno results were done using an "EDDY CURRENT" dynomometer, WITH a weather station that will account for any changes in temperature and pressure during the day. The dyno cell (room) was in a similar condition and the temperature gauge started in the same place. This is probably more care than the Superchips people took in running their tests. Repeat runs were made in the opposite order. I'm glad yours worked for you, you've got good numbers to show it. My chip did not work. I should have numbers on a Diablo in about a month, so maybe I won't be picking on just the Superchip.
An inertia (Dynojet) dyno is still a good tool for doing comparisons. Even though the numbers will be much more accurate for a 3500# vehicle, gains or losses will still be seen. Also, the powertrain loses closer to 90 Hp at maximum load in 2nd gear, not 69. This assumes that 260Hp is being put out at the crank. Maybe only 69Hp is lost in 3rd, but I doubt it. Typically, only about 2/3 gets to the ground.
And for the speedo correction, I believe there is a way to account for gear changes on the back of the instrument cluster. I'll post details when I figure it out. Ford has a way. The other possible way may be to reprogram the GEM (body) module with the Ford NGS scan tool and programmer card. One of these will work - no chip or $300-$400 needed.
Neal's partial post: As for my H.P figures, I have consulted with MIKE TROYER, SUPERCHIPS, and my very accurate DRAGMATH program and came up with that H.P# and torque#. I would DYNO it, but as we all know the DYNOJET style dyno's are mostly set up for MUSTANG's and other vehicles weighing around 3500LBS. So strapping down a 4500 - 5000lb truck on this style dyno gives you WAY false #'s. I just love it when guys with LIGHTNING's say they have 345H.P at the rear wheels STOCK, when the truck only makes 360H.P at the flywheel. SUPERCHIP'S has proven AGAIN and AGAIN that the LIGHTNING's loses 69H.P through the drive train. MIKE TROYER has even told me that they hav'nt seen a LIGHTNING YET make more than 291H.P at the rear wheels, STOCK. Our trucks with the 4R70-W lose 65H.P through the drive train. So intill someone around here gets a "EDDY CURRENT" style dyno machine like SUPERCHIP's has, I won't be getting my truck dynoed. Just my opinion. Hope this hepls you out TRUE BLUE and if you need any more info, just let me know.

I have read in a FORD iatn.net document that Ford EEC V processors do use their closed loop fuel trim to alter their open loop fuel strategies, including at wide open throttle. I don't know if this was true for EEC IV (before '96) processors.

Lutwiller, I agree with you about the chip being worth the money (for speedo correction, shift quality, quicker ET's, etc.). On 4.6 / 5.4 motors, the HP / Trq gains are not as advertised. If they count shift spikes, they (Superchips) are out of their minds. Does TransGo's shift kit need to advertise a 10-20 HP from shift spikes, I think not.
As far as people talking about "Adaptive Fuel Trim" and the like, I only wish a Ford Development Engineer could chime in. When you go WOT, the truck looks at tables, and not it's sensors (some maybe), open loop. While part throttle cruising, the PCM can trim it's fuel based on O2 sensor readings. Every chip I've used, begins its magic immediatley, there is no learning curve (On WOT issues, which is the way most people run on the dyno). I'm sure the newer EEC V's have some adaptive strategies, but if Superchips could make more power, it would show up immediately (or in a few hundred miles), and that hasn't been what I've seen.
I'm not an expert on Ford's EEC, but in the past with EEC IV, gains show up immediately. I usually use Mike Wesley Autologic Software (He used to be a Powertrain Calibration Engineer for Ford) and it always worked flawlessly. Superchips do work, they do have a place, but they don't make (much) more power on the 4.6 and 5.4! Do you think Ford would keep an Engineer that left 20-30 HP out of a program? Any way, buyer beware and if it works for you, it's money well spent.

NO HP OR TORQUE GAINS AT ANY RPM BETWEEN 2700 AND 4700 on my 99 5.4L. I'm glad some are pleased with their Superchip, but I'm warning others that they may get NO PERFORMANCE INCREASE, as I did. I would have been happy with 8-10Hp to the ground. When I get to a scanner, I'll post several results.
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by dirt bike dave:
Just my $0.02 - Superchips makes HP increase claims, but they DON'T say those are PEAK hp gains. If you gain 26 HP at 3,000 rpm but make the same peak HP (or only gain 8 peak hp) at 5000, you've still gained 26 HP SOMEWHERE.
It's totally possible to have no gain in peak HP but still have a huge performance increase due to stronger power everywhere else.
Peak HP is just one spot on the graph, yet you guys get your panties all in a bunch about that one number like it means everything, even though your motor is probably only at peak HP less than 0.1% of the time you operate the truck.
We need to see the dyno graphs of the chip motor vs. stock, not just the peak numbers, to determine if the chip works.
My 'assjet' dyno tells me my chip works as advertised.

DanKryszczuk,
If you still have your Superchips brand chip plugged in try this next time out at the Dyno. Do the test with the chip in first. Then make the second run without the chip. I have been told that it takes a while (as much as 800 miles)for the PCM to "learn" so it will not use all of the new tables in the Superchips for a while. Having it in before the run will eliminate this possibility. The next run without the chip will show the difference if there is one.
Kindest regards

Neal,
All of your performance claims have been e.t., and e.t. can be improved any number of ways. What did your mph do over those runs? That will tell if you were making more hp or not. You also mention that you cooled the truck while waiting to run with the chip, but not whether the motor was the same temp when you made the baseline runs. If you ran the baseline shortly after driving in off the highway, then ran nice and cool with the chip installed most of the gain probably came from a cool motor. If mph didn't change much between those runs then the improvements came from the tranny control and not from added hp.
Bingo. Most aftermarket companies that make these claims are using a hp gain that was at much higher rpm than the hp peak, and rpm levels that are worthless to the user. The chip may very well have shown a 26hp gain at 6000rpm, but what good does that do the typical user? Technically the companies aren't lying, just misleading (and being low-life jerk-offs).

'01BlackF150, although I am not Neal "The HP Freak", I can say that his mph also went up with the runs that we had Milan Dragway and then the weekend after in London, ON. At Milan, we had to sit and wait for almost 2 1/2 hours for our first run because a bunch of the bracket racers were either dumping liquid on the track or sitting in the sand pit at the end of the track. And then after the first race, we had to sit another couple of hours. He doesn't have to sit that long before he can duplicate the same conditions as the previous race. The reason for this is he has two fans that cools the engine and another one that cools the transmission faster than I can cool mine with just the hood up. He has made mention of various times with mph, if you scroll up there is one of the runs that I ended up against him (not by my choice) in and the mph is in there. With his truck, I can tell you that there is nothing and I repeat NOTHING here in Windsor that can beat Neal and his truck. Well, I take that back, he has a pro-stock Ranger in hiding that would do it. If you would go over to the computer chips section and look up "Victories and Defeats" for Neal, you will see that he has pretty much demolished everything (including Dakota RT's, Thunderbird SC's, etc.) with ease other than a couple of cars, one being a Porsche. But he still won. Now with this kind of record, how can he not be making this kind of HP and TQ that he speaks of, I know that he is. Trust me, there is a great number of people here in Windsor that knows this fact and that number is going by the race.

HI!... 01BLACKF-150 : When I show up at the dragstrip with my truck, I don't go racing right away. Usually because it is a F-150 MEET, and I get out and talk to everyone for a couple of hours before we all start racing. Even if it's not a F-150 MEET, I would still let my truck cool down, it's just common sense. IZZY's right that I do have twin 16 electric fans that cool my rad and a small fan on my bigger than stock PERMA COOL tranny cooler. I also have a AUTOMETER engine temp guage and a AUTOMETER trans temp guage. They are both mechanical and VERY accurate. They help me between rounds in cooling the truck down. I usually won't go back onto the track untill my trans temp is below 150 degree's and my coolant temp is around 175 degree's. Hood is up while running fans. Tire preasure is also checked between rounds to make sure it stays constant. The following are my 1/4 mile times with MPH as you requested, with mods on the side, if any :
1ST F-150 ONLINE "MILAN MEET"
BASELINE RUN :
MODS : 4.10 gears, TPS MOD, CUSTOM FABRICATED INTAKE TRACK WITH K&N FILTER.
1/4 - 16.01
MPH - 85.70
2ND RUN :
MODS : SUPERCHIP
1/4 - 15.38
MPH - 88.61
That's a difference of 2.91MPH with the SUPERCHIP!
2ND F-150 ONLINE "MILAN MEET"
1ST RUN :
MODS : CUSTOM PORTED JBA HEADERS, TWIN DERALE 16 INCH ELECTRIC FANS, ASP POWER PULLEYS, RELOCATED ATS, BAUMANN ENGINEERING SHIFT KIT ON STAGE 5, PERMA COOL TRANNY COOLER WITH 10 INCH ELECTRIC FAN, LOWERED TIRE PREASURE TO 22PSI.
1/4 - 14.72
MPH - 92.99
The rest of my runs that day were about the same time.
That's a difference of 4.38MPH.
LONDON DRAGWAY (went for fun)
MODS : same as above except for 19PSI tire preasure. This tracks starting line hooks a lot better than MILAN's.
1/4 - 14.53
MPH - 92.20
That's a difference of 0.79MPH. ( the wrong way, I might add)
As you can see, my E.T is lower but my MPH is slower. This was caused possibly by a ERROR CODE that was found that day. Also my tuck was falling on it's face above 4700RPM in 3RD gear at the end of the track. This was caused by fuel starvation. The 19lb injectors are pretty much maxed out. This problem will be fixed before SPRING comes. My feelings are that my truck would of probably gone 14.30's if it wer'nt for these two things. OH WELL, that's racing!LOL!

HI!... IZZY EDDY : Thanks for the praise, but I would not say that I'm the fastest truck in WINDSOR. I pick and choose my races. I'm not stupid enough to go out and try to race a C-5 CORVETTE, VIPER, or a CAMARO! I usually don't pick races at all. People just get next to me and signal that they want to race. I think my truck holds it's own and surprises a lot of poeple some times. I think it would be safe to say that I am probably the fastest NATURALLY ASPERATED "NEW BODY STYLE" F-150 in WINDSOR right now, but that could change. My goal right now is to go 13.9 N/A this year. Wish me luck!LOL!
HI!... TRUE BLUE : YES, I remember you. Do yourself a favour and give MIKE TROYER a call over at PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS. If you just want your truck for "STREET DUTY", then go with the regular SUPERCHIP. If you plan on going to the dragstrip a lot then I'd go with the SUPERCHIP "FLIPCHIP". This is a SUPERCHIP with 2 seperate programs in it. I just had MIKE T. make a custom "FLIPCHIP" for my truck. If you want to know what I had him do for my "RACEMODE" part of the chip, then you will just have to call him up and ask him!LOL! Then see for yourself, if it's for you. Hope this helps you out.

Say Neal,
I spoke with you awhile back about the elbow boring and I still need to do that, I was going to ask what superchip would I need to get. I'm still looking to put the new ATI supercharger on it sometime in the next year or so, Thanks again for the help.

Hey Neal,
Its me again, Just wanted to know where you got the twin fans (is this a kit) and if that made any diff on the hp's, I guess you can say I'm playing follow the leader, in the things you have done, UPDATE- I did the elbow and I took the tb to about 69mm or close to it- I didn't notice to much but then again I have stock intake and exhaust so go figure! Thanks again for the good info!

HI!... TRUE BLUE : The twin electric fans that I installed on my truck are not a kit. They are two seperate 16 inch DERALE electric "TORNADO" fans. I bought them from SUMMIT RACING and were $119.95 (U.S) each. I installed them using a PERMA COOL installation kit that consists also of a electronic thermostat sensor. This sensor tells the fan when to turn on when hitting the pre-set temp. I also got it from SUMMIT RACING and cost $39.95(U.S), the part # is PRM-19007. I wired one of the fans to the electronic thermostat and the 2ND fan to a manual toggle switch mounted in one of my guage pods next to my engine temp guage. I hope this helps you out.
