Fastoy, mine has just started smelling and it also has signs of this leak. My 150 has 50k miles on it. I am going to Ford tomorrow to see if they can do something about it. May be slim with the miles, if they don't then it may be time for GM to come to life.

Hi Fishnwiz,
Sorry it took so long to reply, I am looking for the work order for my engine replacement. I had the dealer write what was worng and what work they did ,for furture reference. I'll look tonight and post it. I know they told me the block was flawed and they replaced it with no questions asked. I hope this helps.

Thanks Judge, for getting back to me! I am getting the run around as we speak regarding my truck. I explained the problem to the service manager and showed him a copy of all of these posts but he still tells me he can't and won't replace the engine in my truck. I was told that they have NOT replaced any engines for the problems that I am having....only the heads! I explained to them that I did NOT want to have to be back in the shop again with the same problem AFTER my warranty is up. I feel that I may have to try a few other dealers to fix this problem! Thanks again! Mark

I guess I'll join you all and jump on top of my soap box. I have a 99 Expedition E.B. with the same leaking 5.4. It has 31k and I am the second owner. I took it in and the dealer told me they are going to replace the motor. Once I got over the inital shock of having to replace a engine for a oil leak I okay'ed the work to be done. Well now the dealership cant seem to find my motor. It was ordered but they have no idea where it is. They put a tracer on it but still cant find it. How the hell do you lose a motor? I'm from a Ford family and have owned Fords for 16 years but that my change. I had a 95 F150 4WD 5.8 and it was the best vehicle I've ever owned and I regret selling it. These new Fords are not "Ford Tough".

Called the dealer this morning and the motor has been found and will be here in 3 days. They said the motor is coming from Texas. Does anyone know...is this motor a new 2000 or a FQR motor?

Unhappy

Glad to hear they found your motor for you. I myself was NOT so lucky....all I got was a new head gasket and a whole bunch of headaches wondering if my problem is solved, or weather or not this same problem is going to return after thr warranty expires! Seems to me that Ford is well aware of this problem if they are dropping motors into all of these used trucks. Anyone else receive just the gaskets and if so, how are they holding up??? Thanks Mark

crich - that would be an FQR from a Ford authorized rebuilder. I live in Colorado and mine came from Texas also.

Fishnwiz - best of luck, but I think the head gasket will give way just like the original. Will Ford stand by their work even after the original warranty is over, since they already attemepted to fix it? I would check into getting something in writing. If not, I would consider trading or selling it while it's not leaking...

Just to show yall how informed my dealer is....Not even 30 minutes after the call saying it would be here in three days I recieved another call saying my "brand new" motor had just arrived from Ford. I went to the dealer to see my "brand new" engine only to find out is in fact is a FQR engine from Carolton, Texas. After I made the dealer open the crate I found out the block is a 97 with no sticker on the valve cover with the date of manufacturer, only a FQR sticker. Thats not going to help my re-sale at all. Date of manufacturer on the shipping box was 11-22-00. You wouldnt believe how many mechanics were stanting around trying to convince me that is was a "brand new" motor. Made me sick to my stomach. I can only wonder what this "brand new" motor was remanufactured for in the first place and does it have the horsepower of my 99. The dealer could not answer either question, imagine that. Sorry guys if I sound bitter but I'm sure you all understand. I come from a ford family and sixteen years with Fords and been happy until now. Thought about trading it for a Chevy but my ancestor's might come up out of their graves and get me!

crich - what did you look at to determine the block was a 97? I couldn't find any dates on my FQR, but I would be very curious. There is no way I would accept a 97 block in my 99, especially when I still believe they should be putting a "brand new" 00 engine in since I got a piece of junk the first time.

As you can see, this is my first Ford. Problem is, I don't think you can hide from the problem by going to a Chevy - I believe they have even more problems and their service is even worse. Why do we pay so much $$$ for these anyway?

Fishnwiz,

1. Had the passenger side head gasket replaced - leaked oil again within a couple of days (FEB00)

2. Ford said it was the head - head replaced and another new gasket. Turns out the new head was for a 230hp 97 5.4, mine's a 99 5.4 with the 260hp motor. The damn thing would not run smooth, never made it out of the shop - the whole passenger side bank was low on power.

3. Ford said "we screwed up, wrong head -sorry, new one is on the way". New head installed in MAR 00. Oil leaked within two days. Dealer ordered new motor.

4. New motor put in in APR00. The motor was new with a 31 MAR 00 build date. Came complete with exhaust and intake manifolds, injector rails, oil etc. No new warrenty though.

Runs great better that the old 260hp 5.4. I think they changed the exhaust manifold even though the rated hp is the same (260hp). The only thing they screwed up was a stud that threads into the tranny housing - the one where the grounding strap is attached. Dealer drilled it out and used the old nut & bolt fix.

Get a new motor, period.

firsttime- The way I could tell was the number stamped on the top of the block under the intake. When I finally got the mechanics to admit it wasnt a "brand new" motor one of them pointed out this number. The number started with F7, 7 being the year of manufacurer. And I did pitch a fit about it but was told that this was the only motor I was going to get. The vehicle has 31k and I was told the warranty for the FQR motor will go to 43k. Thats not good enough for me so I will demand the ESP warranty. Well see what happens.

MPOCRATS....SORRY to hear about all of the B.S. that you had to go through. That is NOT a good sign for me! I did get a new head on the passanger side and a new gasket! I am keeping a close eye on it and hope it leaks right of way so I can get a NEW motor! I can't believe that they did not at least extend your warranty after all of the crap they put you through. How could they replace the wrong head??? That sucks BIGTIME! Will keep you posted on my results! Mark

Well guys, I have been informed of a new head gasket for my 5.4 and they say no warranty. $1,100 worth of gasket and I wonder if this is going to work? Sounds like no one is happy with the gasket fix, still keeps on leaking. What the hell is a fellow suppose to do?

Stkitchens..The price for the passenger side head, gasket and replacement coolants and oil was 785$ on my 4x4 according to the receipt that I got. I am not sure if Ford is charged at a different rate then a regular customer as it was covered under warranty.
As I said before....I have been driving Ford for 20+ years...all straight 6 (300) engines with NO problems before this and I loved them. I have heard of a few problems with the 4.7 engine as well as the 5.4. I guess we are all at the will of the builders of these trucks, whether they are made by Chevy, Ford, Dodge or G.M. Mark
