Question RE: '99-'01 replacement engines

How can I tell from looking at a replacement crate motor if it is new or FQR and what year the engine design is? I have a '99, 4.6l, 21,000 miles that is being replaced next week and after asking questions about what all comes on the engine, the service writer offered to show me the engine (which I planned on anyway).

FYI -it took two weeks to get an engine, I was told it is a new 2000 motor, the dealer has provided a loaner free, the dealer has 3 other 4.6/5.4 being replaced along with mine, I had PS and pass. side oil leak, FORD motor company has been very unhelpful and dishonest on the phone, the dealer so far has been very helpful and honest.

FQR Motors have a sticker on the passenger side valve cover that says "Ford Quality Renewal" These stickers have to be there by law to indicate a remaned engine. Neither the dealer or the owner is supposed to remove it by penalty of fraud when you go to sell or trade, unless you volunteer the information.

We have just received a FQR motor for a '99 F150 and it is far from satisfactory, sounds like a diesel at idle and appears to have the same slap problem when cold the original motor did.

I cant believe Ford if only offering FQR motors to people who are still in factory warranty.

Thumbs down

From what I have been reading on this board..it sounds like many (not all) of the FQR engines are not up to expectations.

This is what a FQR V10 looks like. Notice NO FQR sticker on the valve cover.

**Thanks for the info, especially V10man for the pic. The picture looks like a brand new engine! I will be sure to watch for labeling on the engine.
**Mastercraft, I have done alot of research on what they are using to replace the engines under factory warranty, you might want to question the dealer about using a FQR motor. The dealer I went to has a replacement procedure list that indicates '99 models use a new 2000 motor with some minor accessory changes. I'd hate for someone to get a FQR when they are entitled to a new engine. The dealer may install a FQR, file a claimback with the factory for a new 2000, and make a few bucks!
